Roughly three years ago…

“A babysitting gig, really Eliza?” Jensen asked, smiling trying to get out of the mission.

“Jensen,” Jude interrupted before Eliza could talk, “Your last mission left you in the hospital for two weeks. We’re taking this gig as you called it.”

“Besides,” Eliza stresses, glaring at Jude for jumping in, “She knows who red fox is. You two need to protect her until she arrives safely at HQ.”

“Can’t someone go down and interview her?” Jensen asks looking between Jude and Eliza, he knows he’s going to give in; he’d do anything for Jude.

“Already tried; she said until we can make her feel protected and safe that she wouldn’t talk,” Eliza informs the tall man.

“Come on,” he sighs, “Best go suit up, Jude.”

They’re walking out of the room until Eliza calls out to them, “You two are riding in a SUV behind hers, she doesn’t exactly trust us completely, and so she refuses to be in a car with someone other than the driver.”

Jensen sighs, just what he needs a paranoid witness to baby until they get her to the secure warehouse.

Jude and Jensen packed up their gear, strapping their .45 colt pistols to their thighs, a knife on the opposite leg, and their AK’s grasped in their hands. They were as ready as they could be, and climbed into the SUV to make the trip to pick up the witness.

They didn’t actually meet the witness, she was already bundled in a black SUV of her own, when the arrived. Their driver just simply pulled up behind the other vehicle and followed as it merged onto the highway.

Everything was quiet as the vehicles roared across the asphalt. With nothing happening Jensen had plastered himself to Jude, a few miles back when the traffic had dispersed to nothing as the sun had set and the landscape became shadowed.

He was currently kissing down Jude’s bared chest; his shirt rucked up under his chin. The driver was laughing at the way Jensen didn’t care who was around, Jude was complaining that they were on a job, and Jensen was just whining because really there was nothing better to do. His hand had just reached Jude’s covered erection when from the corner of his eye he say a light streaming towards the SUV in front of his. He jerked as the light hit the vehicle in the side, slinging it across the road, and spinning on the dirt covered shoulder before coming to a stop. Fire was flickering out of the smashed windows; the smoke coursing towards the darkened sky.

As their own truck skidded, Jensen and Jude dropped from the back, rolling on the ground to save themselves from being hurt watching as the SUV came to a stop feet behind the fire consumed one. Jensen pulled out his cell, calling Eliza, as his eyes searched out the land, looking for the perpetrator. “Witness down,” he said into the cell, before shutting it, knowing that Eliza could find them with the GPS system.

“Seven o’clock, Jen,” Jude calls out, as he rises from his crouch and takes off running. Quickly, Jensen jumps up, intent on following suit, but instead trips over a solid object. Cussing, he looks back to see what he tripped over and notices the body of a young woman for the first time. She has short blonde hair, and a piece of metal sticking out of her stomach. He shudders as he reaches his index and middle finger to her throat. He knows before he checks that’s she’s dead, but still checks, hoping he’s wrong. He waits; fingers pushed into her pulse, but no heart beat moves her vein. Standing, he pulls out his pistol, and takes off running to where Jude disappeared to.

He hears the shot before seeing the two figures thirty yards from his position. He watches, still running towards them, as one drops to the ground, the other, looking up, seeing him approach before taking off at a sprint away from the dying body. Jensen skids to a stop. Looking down, he sees Jude, his chest rising and falling with every choked off breath he tries to inhale. Jensen forgets about Jude’s shooter, dropping to the ground to try and save his partner.

But he couldn’t help. That night, he lost the love of his life, and the agency’s only witness to figuring out who red fox was.
