answers please...what do you think of God?

It makes me sad. It makes me sad that so many people hate the idea of God. It makes me sad because it's so opposite from what I know and I just don't understand. Have you been hurt, pushed down, or ridiculed by the idea of God or those representing him? Do you want to fight free from what has oppressed you? I owe my life to a God who gave me a ( Read more... )

I wouldn't say that I'm very much against the idea of God. And hate is quite a strong word, which I don't think I'd use, ever, in this context.
I am against the way people use God, and bend "what God says" to whatever position they want it to support. The narrow way, that's what keeps me from organized religion-- it is so easy to abuse. If I found some religion, or some denomination or other of Christianity, that I thought was spot-on in terms of God, then I would immediately have to doubt myself for thinking I can know God's ways so minutely. The closest I've gotten to organized religion is going to Quaker Meeting, which as you probably know is rather loosely organized ( ... )

Thank you so much for your honest and thoughough answer, and for taking the time to express to me how you feel. This helps a lot. And you're right. Hate is a strong word and I'm sorry. I have met people with whom 'hate' seemed appropriate, but still I shouldn't be rash, and I've noticed that most people are quite open and gentle to other people's ideas. Which is encouraging ( ... )

While I was in Wales I had the opportunity to go to the General Quaker Meeting, wherein representatives of all the smaller local Meetings (=anyone who wanted to go) came together to discuss, among other things, what exactly it is that Quakers believe ( ... )

That's interesting. I'd heard of the Quakers before, but didn't really know anything about them. I know we won't agree about God in just a few words, but you have helped me a lot to understand your view a bit more. Sometimes it's just good to try to see things through different eyes, even if I don't completely agreed...but to find some middle ground, like I think we did here. That's cool.

I'm not against the idea of "God", and by that I (and I'm assuming you) mean God in the traditional sense, the christian God, the creator, and the all powerful/knowing/everything God who "mapped" out my life and has complete control and hears me when I pray. I'm not against it, but I can't believe it. The first thing I can't believe in is The Bible and that it is true. I don't take it literally and I don't think it's meant to be taken that way. I think that The Bible is amazing. I think a lot of good and a lot of bad has come from it. The meanings of The Bible and the majority of what it represents is good. The Ten Commandments are great rules to live your life by. I agree with a lot of the things The Bible supports. I don't think it was written by people God worked through. I think the people who wrote it were very smart and it's so unbelievable that a book could be around for this long. The Bible is so old and people still read it and even live by it. There is nothing like the Bible. So, I don't believe in The Bible. I don't know ( ... )

Wow..thanks for all this. I haven't read "Anna Karenina" yet. I was going to watch it the other day, but didn't have the chance. Now I have more of a reason to, so I'll look into that. Does the movie compare well to the book ( ... )
