"V" is for Victory

This is my ficlet contribution for the Jack Alpha Bits section of  SG-1 GenFic day.  I haven't written fic in months and I think this has stirred the muse.  It's a tag for Unending.

He stood ramrod straight in the formation, the look on his face as frozen as the ship he stared at through the observation window. They would have ( Read more... )

Oh, ow. Jack seeing the loss of his team as his greatest failure, even if it means they won... So Jack.

A tad confused here, though. Are you suggesting that Jack could travel to the planet where the ship was in orbit and actually see them? Because outside the time bubble, those fifty years were only instants. Or am I missing something?

As far as I understood it, outside the bubble, they experienced the years according to their normal time before Sam and Teal'c reset it. Time was passing at different speeds depending on where you were standing. Over time, I figured the area would have become a protected area for study by the SGC science division and a place where those that could know would come and hold a memorial. They did save the galaxy after all. It could happen in an alternate timeline. For a ficlet, I wasn't trying to get too technical.

I really like the sentiment, but there is a logic problem. Still you have the emotion down beautifully.

Logic? With sci-fi fic-writing? Surely you jest! :P

I love the image of Jack grimly being one of the last to truly remember and care about what the team sacrificed for Victory. I've always been somewhat twistedly fond of the concept of death by time dilation. A Matter of Time always gives me the chills. You wrote his emotion very well.

I have to admit to being confused along with Fig Newton on how this is possible, though.

I was going for from the outside looking in. See my note above.

Sela, you made me cry. I had forgotten how good you are at the angst thing. OMG. I can just see Jack standing there. I never thought about the original timeline from O'Neill's perspective. (looks around for a tissue)

I'm glad you liked it. I hadn't seen much about what Jack was going through on the other side of "Unending" so when I took "Victory", I knew it had to be a twisted victory. For him, the pain and the loss was unending.

I totally got that he was living the 50 years or so outside the time dilation inside the ship. Until the reset courtesy of Teal'c, everyone would have had to move on while our heroes languished inside the ship. Great angst. You have given completion to the other side of the equation.

I always felt that "Unending" was incomplete without some mention of Jack. That is what I wanted for this ficlet to do - give some sense of closure. I'm glad you liked it.

I think the writers would have had a very difficult time with Jack on board and not have him in a relationship with Sam--They always skirted the edges of J/S shipping, but they would have had little choice but to plunge in (or go totally slash and have Jack hook up with Cam/Daniel (and Vala)...
