I have occasional discussions with a friend concerning the series Mad Men.
Don't get me wrong, I like the show...but she says it's an excellent portrayal of how women were treated back in the early '60s. (She and I were both about seven years old during the time span of the most recent Mad Men season, so I'm not so sure I trust her memory. But I digress.)
Me? I say if you want a good, honest portrayal of how women were treated in the '60s, watch Star Trek (the original series). They don't hit you with it every episode, but you get these occasional "Oh, it's just a girl" moments...
Ever read any 1960s comic books. (Marvel collects them in their Essential series.) There was one Fantastic Four where Mr. Fantastic was telling the Invisible Woman something along the lines of, "You have the most important job of all: Making sure our house is clean and we're well fed so we can go out and fight the bad guys."
That's why you'll never see a biopic of Muhammad of him raping wives in front of their soon to be executed husbands, and his nuptials with a nine-year-old.
