My hands are numb with cold, but I run them under hot water, wring them through and through. I scrape off the black nickel callouses and expose the soft tips of my fingers. I can feel them again now, and they seem strangely sensitive. I will have to build the callous up again, but for now I tear them down.

And this is how I start over.
