Maybe Klarth looked just as strange to all the townspeople too. At the very least, he looked foreign. Then again, if you asked Zelgadis, people just liked to question what they didn't understand. It was exactly why he kept the hood up, despite it obviously not helping his image any. It was better to look mysterious than to have them staring at his 'condition ( ... )

Not only did Zelgadis look like a rock; the texture of his hand proved it. He seemed to not want to say much about Klarth's momentary reaction though. That the scholar didn't ask was good enough for him. "Why don't we head over here then."

Gathering the books he had taken, he led them to the other side of the building, where there were outdoor tables and cleared areas of dirt obviously meant for outdoor study. Farther off, a structure of brick seemed to lead further underground, with signs labeling it along the lines of 'dangerous spells must be confined to the basement'. But they didn't go near it, and instead he sat down at one of the benches, setting down the books and passing the first one across to Klarth.

"I suppose I should ask first," Zelgadis began, getting the basics out of the way as quickly as possible, "How skilled would you rate yourself in the magic-- er, summoning of your world?"

Zelgadis nodded, "That will make it easier then." If Klarth already knew how to focus magical energy, he wouldn't have to waste time teaching him to concentrate. "The first spell I will teach you is pretty simple, that way you can catch the basics of how our magic works ( ... )
