I'm old enough and in the right geography to say that I've experienced both those things first-hand

I grew up under a rock in South Carolina, I never knew about anything, and I think my parents were much happier that way. I never have kept up with pop culture much, except when I fall obsessively in love with something specific, like sexually ambiguous men in sparkly outfits, muppets, and japanese rodents.
