A dry drum just means that you shouldn't have any other clothes or water or anything in the washing machine when you dye....I've never done washing machine dying before, I tend to prefer the bucket and cold water dye method, at least then you can see the intensity of the colour before you take it out. If you chose to do it this way you'll need some salt to fix the colour too...

And don't worry! You should only need to rinse your top really well once before you can wear it!

ooh ok! thanks :)
so the drum is the inside bit? and you just stick the dye and salt in that? sounds a bit dodgy doesn't it - bet everything we wash from then on will come out navy! :|

if you ever come round to my house, i will show you many washing machine drums. :>
they're the bit of the machine you put your washing in. round and big and metal. sort of a squat cylinder, when they're not attached to a machine.

i am so glad i have actually learnt something about washing machines from my daddy's job :)

ahhh :) I thought it meant the soap tray thing :/
oh well.
I got the cold dye in the end because it was so much cheaper. I am sure it will go drastically wrong :)

get dylon machine dye. it works really well. and make sure you have enough salt
then just tip the dye through the holes in the drum and then the salt and put it on a 60 degree wash, then the highest you can with washing powder if i remember rightly, to set the colour and get rid of the dye. You can wear it straight after that. Don't worry, the dye all gets washed out. if you want to make extra sure you can do an empty wash in the machine with bleach or something. anyway, all the instructions come with the dye
oh, but if you're dying a white top you should be careful about the stitching. it usually doesn't pick up the dye and then you'll be left with a navy top with white stitching. i guess it depends what the thread is made of, but i've never been able to dye stitching properly

thats the one i was thinking of :) do you dye lots of stuff? i am only doing 1 top but it seems such a waste.. maybe i will dye all my old knickers :p
ohh, so you basically go inside the machine and put the dye in there and chuck the salt over it? i think we can actually do a 90 degree cotton wash.. but yeah the instructions say 60..
how much is the dye? its probably worth it since the top is ruined anyway.. maybe i can colour the stitches in with a felt tip before the photo :P

yeah that's right. i think it's about £4 but it's been a while since i've bought dye. I've actually gone round stitching with a black permenant marker before. it still doesn't look gret but it's better than white stitches on black material :p

In my experience (sorry if this is a bit late :p) the best thing to use is either the machine dye or dylon cold dye with the fixy stuff.

Just cos otherwise you have to do this whole impossible heat it up in a big pan.

If you use cold dye you need a bucket ;p

if you use machine dye you need a washing machine and salt.

Either way it's fun :D

Machine dye gives by far the best result though.

It is a bit late sorry, as I did it yesterday.
It didn't come out well at all :( *cries* The top I wanted to wear is a sort of dirty denim colour and the stitching is still white (as I was warned it would be but I didnt realise just how much stitching there was!) - the other top was faded blue tie dye, and is now dark blue tie dye :(
Should have splashed out on the machine stuff eh?! never mind..

Yeah maybe, trying ot hand dye stuff is usually never as good as the good old machineable fun stuff :D

Though my dad isn't too happy when it gets full of salt cos i might break it or something :S
