Have you tried, in recent years, to rent a car with a manual transmission?

I hadn't until last night, seeing as I only drive automatic and never learned the other one. Now, I can recall a time when I had to request automatic, and the prettiest cars never came with one

If between you you own a car with a stick shift, why not learn on that? The rental-car plan is puzzling to me.

xyon treats his car with the ultimate respect. The concept of being less than perfectly gentle with the gears freaks him out (as does the amount of wheel spin I put on those freshly changed tires).

No one wants to hurt their OWN gearbox after all, but a rental? Be as brutish as you like!

Note: I am now all the way up to 3rd gear, somewhat smoothly. If only we didn't live in a super-hilly neighborhood, I could practice at home!

Yeah, car rental companies in the US have been automatic only for years. I wouldn't expect to find a manual transmission in any of them.
