Name That Reference

My latest project at the office is to build a 3D model of a wall segment and glass panels. The panels will, once built in the real world, have the names of retired UCF employees etched on them. For the model the boss told me to use fake names, but you know how I can't resist using references to my favorite movies, games, and TV shows in my work ( Read more... )

I could probably do them all with a little effort, but I will allow that honor to be someone else's. I will say that I see tributes to Ghostbusters (obviously), Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (and btw, it is "Neal"), Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Angel (including a bloody obscure reference), Futurama, Family Guy, Resident Evil, Wonderfalls, Bowfinger, The Lone Gunmen, and Evolution.

Pretty impressive and fun. Mine would have likely included super-hero secret identities....

You missed four that I see just taking a quick glance, but excellent job there. You see those other panels? 30 more names needed for each. Quick, to the DVD shelf!

Which Angel reference did you think was obscure? And how the hell did you spot Evolution? I thought that would be the most obscure of all.

Okay, MST3K (or War of the Worlds, take your pick), The Critic, and Groundhog Day. I don't know what the other one is...

Oh, and the Marcus Hamilton refernce was the one that took me a bit (and admittedly an internet search) to figure out.

As far as Evolution, I have an affinity for the scene in the Jeep with Play that Funky Music. I can identify with it for some odd reason...

You have to be a gamer to get the last one you missed. I tried to pick names that sounded both real enough and "impressive" enough to be on a wall like this. "Mario Mario" doesn't work, nor does "Turanga Leela".

As for Evolution, I just bought the DVD yesterday. $6 at Best Buy. I couldn't pass that up.

I agree that I need more female names and I'll be borrowing some of the ones on that list for the next panels. The problem is that the names have to be somewhat under the radar. "Mr. Homer Simpson" would be caught right away and they'd make me remove it, but "Gen. Jack O'Neill" nobody knows about in terms of who will see this professionally. So they have to be sneaky. Otherwise "Mr. Balki Bartokomous" would have been on the first panel already ;-)

Well, yes, but real-life people still can have weird names -- you just wouldn't want to use the ones that are identifiable by the non-fan.
