Erm...maybe Shep made some off hand comment that he looked podgy so he wore it to look slimmer cause darker colours are slimming, then Shep noticed just how damn fine he looked in that grey uniform and forced him to wear it, then jumped him and it took six episodes to get that stains out...
Or maybe when they know they are going into combat situations they have to wear it...but personally I prefer the first version
In pics of the new season Carson is wearing a grey uniform offworld too... so I'm not to sure. I asked Martin Gero and he didn't know, so it's nothing on the writer's part.
A little tidbit: In one article, David H. mentioned that they switched solely to the grey jackets because the jackets from the first half of the season were uncomfortable. *shrugs*
ok hi random SGA lurker/reader coming out of the woodwork. Nothing really much to do with Rodney or the grey jacket (although I did have a half formed idea that it was due to his more 'military' status because he happens to be shooting things more often - in S2 pics both he and Carson wear the grey and GUNS but in one pic Zelenka is present wearing the tan and minus gun. Thoughts?).
I will admit I've bought into the idea of each section of people wearing different colours that we've seen, blue for science, white for medical, etc (this came from a fic that I cannot for the life of me remember). Also, that Weir is red because she's the leader. But has anyone else noted that in Rising, there are two red panel jacketed people on the Stargate ramp fiddling with the MALP that Sumner glares at before they're about to dial the new gate address? I only noticed because the chick has a New Zealand flag on her jacket and I have an extreme patriotic moment.

Uh....newcomer here. I have a theory about his jacket. I think the reason that Rodney and later Carson switched to the grey jacket is because of the fact that they are the head of their respective departments. I like some of the other ideas that you had though. Hehe i may just be out of my mind though....
