"No," she responded. It was flat, and just a little defiant. She had waited for him, intent to stand in his way if he tried to attack her grandmother. The hands that were supporting her chin fell to Winry's lap as she sat up. The girl noted that the sun was slowly setting, and the air was getting cooler. She should have worn a jacket.
She also should have told Ed and Jade that Envy had planned to visit, but there hadn't been time. She would just have to stand up to him and hope for the best.
And so she stood, on the third step up to the porch, and spoke, "I won't."
Envy's fingers dig into the cloth covering his palms so that he can feel his nails. This stupid fucking girl. He could have killed her the other week. He very nearly had. It had been perfectly within his power to do so and he'd left her alive so that he could hear from her that she'd been lying. Still, after it all, she refused to admit to it
( ... )
Even if she could fight back, she wouldn't. There was a small moment when she almost fell back from the surprise of him coming so close so fast. Was this a scare tactic? Yes. Did it work? No. Okay maybe a little, but she wasn't back down. She wasn't giving up. She gave her word. So Winry stood, higher than Envy thanks to her own height and the steps, but she didn't look down on him. No. She looked at him.
Why was he so difficult? Didn't their last meeting prove to him that she wasn't lying? All the blood and tears, and he still rejected her offer. And, instead of acceptance, he threatened to kill her grandmother. How could Ed be so stupid? To reject Envy like that? It just made things worse. More complicated. Ed had thrown fuel onto the fire. However Winry was determined to walk straight into the flames and come out alive.
The blond widened her stance, feet shoulder width apart. She wasn't very intimidating, especially not bruised as she was. "About a minute before the body would cease to react."
She'd actually answered it? And seriously, too. Envy might have laughed if he weren't so angry. Stupid fucking girl. Didn't she know not to do this? She should have known better. She knew exactly what Envy was capable of and what he had done in the past. She knew what he wanted to do to Ed and his family and that he would stop at nothing to do it.
The girl thought this was funny. With her friends and everyone she knew telling her to leave Envy alone, she thought she'd be funny and push at him some more. Humans were stupid. Envy knew that. They'd poke at a snake thinking they'd be fast enough to get away when it struck.
Envy's hand lashed out to catch Winry's top and fling her from the stairs by it. With his height he only appeared to have little strength. But aside from Greed he'd been one of the strongest. He wasn't going to let some fucking human ridicule him and belittle him.
Winry struggled to right herself, spitting the bit of earth that had made it past her lips. Was this going to be the same as last time? Will he beat her senseless until he was bored and then just disappear again? Or was he really going to kill her this time? She had no way of knowing, and yet she still stood up and looked at him. The mechanic didn't bother with dusting herself off. It'd be silly, because she expected to be on the ground again sometime soon.
After a moment of checking her injuries from the toss, she walked toward the steps again. She would not let him pass to hurt Pinako.
