Tears began to well up in Winry's eyes. It hurt. But he was wrong. Envy was wrong about her and what she was trying to accomplish. She didn't want to make him look like a fool. She didn't want whatever ridiculous idea he thought she wanted. She could taste the blood in her mouth, feel the warm liquid drip down her chin.

As he tightened his grip a gasp of pain left her. She wince and whatever liquid she was holding back in her eyes fell down her cheeks.

"You're wrong."

Envy pulled hard at her hair like she was nothing more than a rag doll. And, in essence, that's all she was. It's all any human was. Envy was tired of them. These humans and how they could so easily promise something before realizing what it meant. They could promise to love him no matter what he did and so easily go back on those words when they realized they couldn't change him. That he wouldn't become some sweet little boy.

"Wrong?" he hissed. "Wrong? How many times have I heard that fucking word. How many times have I heard your promise from others. How many times have they left." Envy's other hand darted out and caught Winry by her face so that he was pressing his fingers hard into her jawline. "It's so simple for you, isn't it? To say some words without knowing what they mean. You'd promise to give someone the world if it meant getting what you wanted in return. Save yourself the pain and stop with your promises to me before I strangle you with your tongue."

Winry cried out with that pull on her hair. He made it so difficult to reach out to him. She almost thought about giving him what he wanted, just so he'd leave. But that would be a lie. And she promised Envy that she wouldn't lie to him.

Winry struggled to talk. The fingers digging into her face made it almost impossible, but she had to try.

"What... could I possibly... gain? What... do I want... from you? Why would... I lie... if it just hurts me?"

"What do you want from me?" Envy repeated, angry. "What will you gain by desiring my company? What do you think I'm going to do, girl? Be your friend? Stay with you when you're lonely? Accompany you on errands? Do you think I'm some fucking pet? Do you think I'm some idiot human?"

Envy could have easily crushed her face with his fingers. Humans were so fragile. Once broken they couldn't be repaired. If he broke her face right here it would be the end of it. Though he couldn't deny his curiosity in hearing her. It was one thing to listen to her struggle online, but it was another to do it in person. Now he could hear her lies.

"No human wants a monster, girl. Will you still care for me when I deliver a dead infant to your doorstep as a present? Will you still want me when I've killed everyone around you? When I tear your house down because I can? You stupid fucking girl. You lie because it amuses you."

"I don't."

And she didn't. She didn't lie to him. She didn't think of him as a pet or a monster. Her hand reached up and wrapped itself around his wrist that held her jaw. Why couldn't he understand? Why couldn't he see that she wasn't out to hurt him? She didn't even try to fight back! Was it all the past disappointment? Had so many people really let him down? Just the thought of such a thing made tears -- not of pain -- but of sorrow flow down her cheeks. Because of the way Envy was holding her, Winry had no choice but to look up at him. To stare into those violet eyes that said he knew nothing of friendship or love.

But she knew better than that. Despite his rejection of the subject in conversation, Winry knew he had had Axel. Winry knew he was capable of enjoying the company of someone else. And that just made her cry more. She didn't mean to, but through all her thinking she let his name pass by her lips. Envy wouldn't cry, so she cried for him.
