Question: Should you stay friends with someone who continuely betrays your trust, nevers gives a thought to your feelings, only their own, is selfish and self-centered and self-destructive???

Depends on what you want from and what you bring to the friendship yourself.

I think that really depends on what you want out of that person. You can either except them for what they are, and get what you need from that "friendship", or just be friendly during social situations and not deal with them on a normal basis. Or you can be a total bitch and just ignore them compltely.

Thankfully I don't really feel that way about anyone in life, but I have imagined situations where people did betray my trust, or lied to me about something important, and I'm pretty sure I'd cut them off completely. Thats the one thing in life I don't think I could take.

They make me laugh even when I'm depressed but after this last betrayal, I'm not so sure that is true anymore.

Its a hard and fast rule that I live by. You can't rely on anyone, even yourself. But you can always rely on someone to be themselves. Accept that this person will continue to betray your trust, never give a thought to your feelings, be selfish and self-centered and self-destructive. Balance that against how much they make you laugh when your depressed and treat them accordingly.

Friendship and trust are to be earned. And that takes effort. Especially after a betraytal, even after an apology.
