Hello everyone! My boyfriend found this article in the opinion section of a local newspaper.  I tried to scan the actual article in, but for some reason my scanner and software decided not to work, so you'll have to trust me when I say that this is VERBATIM from the letter...

"Homework has gotten out of hand for students

There's got to be two sides to every story right...I want to play devil's advocate! After seeing it now from every point of view possible (student, teacher, and person in charge of making sure kid gets homework done) I have come to the conclusion that homework should only EVER be given out when it is not busy work which is probably what that parent is talking about. I don't really remember having much homework until about 5th or 6th grade, and to be honest, most of my school memory or actually trying to do well in school starts around 8th or 9th grade. I'm sure before then I had a life where I went out and played with kids after school, did swimming lessons, or dance lessons, or other stuff you can't do through the school. But the 3rd grader I work with now has a life dominated by homework, she comes home with spelling words like haphazardous. I'm pretty sure I didn't know what that meant until high school. And maybe she has the advantage that she's seen it before and can spell it correctly, but most likely, it's just in that ( ... )

While I agree that there may be too much homework assigned by some teachers, this letter was "written" by an 8th grade student. I was pointing out the fact that the letter in and of itself was rather incoherent and difficult to understand the point which the young lady was trying to argue. I didn't understand where the heck she was going by mentioning the "backpack law" or whatever with no support to it. I don't assign homework - my kids don't do it. They're spending too much time playing video games and getting drunk ( ... )

Hey friend!

Actually I do want a job for 2009-2010. That's mostly why I'm going back to school and finishing up my cert and maybe possibly my masters this year. But as soon as my NYS cert comes through I'm going to apply for my cert through DoDEA and try and come back here then. We'll see how well that works out, my plans have a way of changing instantly. Anyhow...

On to more fun things!!! Boston! I sooooo want to go. I haven't been there since I was like...uhh...yeah, a long time ago. I don't even know how old I was. And I don't remember it very well. But I remember loving it, and I'm sure now I'd just appreciate it all the more!!!! Train sounds like a great plan, July would be best, after the 10th is fine....I maaaaay be away for part of August so that would be bad. When and for how long shall we go?? We have soooo much talking and catching up to do when I get back. So much. :)

No seriously... honor roll?

I protest, because it's not fair.
Hey kid! Try arguing that in court, or anywhere for that matter. I assure you, it won't get you far.

Kids spend most of their lives doing school work or homework.
Tip: don't go to grad school...

Kids have friends, and plan to get an education and a life, but homework isn't part of this plan.
Says who?

I sincerely hope this kid wasn't planning on getting a doctorate or entering ANY field that requires college or grad school. She'll be in for a rude awakening.
