I think I just tried to run before I could walk. I just have to be patient with it. Inkle I can warp & bang out without thinking. But because I hand measured & cut all the warp, it's all slightly off from each other.
What are you using for a loom? You need to be able to adjust the tension on each warp thread/card individually if you're getting loops. I've taken to using a chunk of 2x4 and C-clamps as a loom, despite having 2 rather nice and expensive TW looms as it's easier to adjust the different threads that way.
Getting the tension correct will also make the cards behave better. Too little tension and they start getting ideas about individuality. Too tight and they won't turn at all.
I find that one of those safety pin style knitting stitch holders is a great way of keeping the cards properly aligned when I'm not working on the piece. It's also useful for reminding you of which way you're turning the cards next -- stick it through the top holes that are going to be turned down next turn when you're done weaving. Michaels and Joanne Fabrics sell them.
It sounds like your knots are slipping from the beginning. When the cards are in use I tend to tie the cards up with some cording through the shed so things don't move. if things are moving that much it also sounds like your tension is too loose.
Honestly, you've got enough stuff on your mind right now that I would put the loom away for a less stressful time to work on it. You've got an alternate plan...go with it and conquer tablet weaving later.
