i know there's lots of landscaped grounds around the capitol, but not a playground area. that might be a place to start.

The UC Davis Arboretum. It isn't in Sacramento but is relatively close and I think there is decent parking near the arboretum and on campus.

McKinley Park (601 Alhambra) has a really neat wooden playground/structure, as well as a duck pond, rose gardens, and a decorative fountain, so that would be my first suggestion.

Another option is at Arden & McClaren, the "William B. Pond Recreation Area" is pretty and borders the river.

I second McKinley Park - it's a really great place for photos, and has a decent playground.
