5 SGA/Something Else Fusions that Break my Heart

Most of these have happy-ish endings, but they still leave me pleasantly heart-achy. The best stories usually do.

Title: From the Depths
Author: gaiaanarchy
Rating: R (language, mostly)
Character/Pairing: McShep, small amounts of implied McKay/OFC and Sheppard/OMC
Word Count: ~ 16,000
Warnings: death of supporting character
Why I chose this: SGA/Little Mermaid fusion that manages to be both hilarious and sad. It's very easy to fall into the trap of disliking the OFC in this one ("She's trying to take Rodney from John!"), but she's really an amazing character and remains one of my favourite OCs in this fandom.
Excerpt: “Can I . . . um . . . help you?” John asked. It wasn’t like he routinely ran into mute naked girls on alien beaches or anything. He was feeling a little out of his element here.

The girl made another screech, pointing towards the water.

“Um . . . okay, well, how about you just sit tight and . . .” he wasn’t wearing his jacket, so he didn’t know how to solve this whole nudity thing. Maybe they could just walk back to camp and then figure out where in the hell she came from.

Title: Living Will
Author: barely_bean
Rating: PG-13
Character/Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Warnings: death of supporting characters
Why I chose this: This story fuses SGA and Pushing Daisies. If you don't know the latter, it's about a guy who can bring people back from the dead, but not without a price. This is a rather quiet story that has John and Rodney meet as children and then again when they're adults, with the possibly inevitable results.
Excerpt: When John Sheppard slips back into Rodney's life, it throws everything off. Rodney remembers what it was like to have somebody like him, and want to spend time with him not because he's the smartest guy in two galaxies (which he could have told John even back then) or because they're sycophants trying to suck up to him so that he'll review their work or go easy on them about their paper or help them out with the dissertation committee. Rodney wants John to like him again, and just *how* much he wants that surprises Rodney.

By the time he figures out that he doesn't want John just as a best friend, it's already too late and he's dead.

Title: A Beautiful Mind
Author: bergann
Rating: PG-15
Character/Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Word Count: ~ 5,500
Warnings: None that I'm aware of
Why I chose this: Fusion of SGA and A Beautiful Mind, this is one of the most beautifully devastating not-quite-sane!Rodney stories out there.
Excerpt: Their Princeton days are long over, and Rodney’s hands itch to cup John’s face, stroke over his skin; but they’re adults and professors, can’t get away with it anymore and Rodney has never been good at being apart. Every visit starts the same, and every visit ends the same. John doesn’t invite Rodney to visit him, and Rodney doesn’t ask, but as John packs his bags and heads out after a day, a week, a weekend; Rodney will always stand the doorway looking after him.

“I lo… I… miss you, you know.” Rodney calls out - to the leaves, the snow, the sun or the rain; to John walking calmly away.

“I miss you too,” John smiles, the corner of his eyes crinkling and Rodney can see it, even with the distance, and Rodney watches as the cab pulls away, leaving no trace of him behind.

Title: Anywhere But Vegas
Author: reddwarfer
Rating: PG
Character/Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Warnings: deaths of supporting characters
Why I chose this: This is the first of 3 stories that fuse SGA with Stephen King's The Stand. The other two are Just a Few Detours and A Collision of Habits. I love The Stand, so I probably would have loved this 'verse even if it weren't so engaging.
Excerpt: "Hey," Rodney calls out, as he pulls his car to a stop. "Need a ride?"

"Depends on where you're headed," the man answers with a smirk. He's carrying a guitar that Rodney hadn't noticed before.

"Nebraska," he says, hoping he doesn't have to explain the insanity of him going to a place not so much because an old lady asked him to but because a scary guy asked him to go somewhere else.

"That's where I'm headed," the man says with a grin. "Hemingford Home," he adds, and Rodney nods, feeling shaken to the core.

Title: Knights Errant
Author: friendshipper
Rating: PG
Character/Pairing: Gen. John, Elizabeth, Jeannie, Rodney
Word Count: 5,300
Warnings: off-screen character death
Why I chose this: An SGA/Knight Rider fusion that's technically labelled crack (and I suppose it is) and yet still manages to depress the hell out of me. Brilliant writing, but then that's kind of to be expected.
Excerpt: There was a pause; then the sound cut off and a blond head popped up on the far side of the Trans Am, sliding out of a welding visor. "Elizabeth! Hi! Oh, is this the new driver?"

"I hope he drives better than the test drivers," another voice grumbled, the source entirely hidden. The voice was male, slightly distorted as if over a speaker, and John couldn't tell where it was coming from. "Morons, the lot of them. I almost threw an axle the last time. Where do you find these people, Elizabeth -- NASCAR?"

"Mer, be polite," the blonde mechanic snapped, and whacked the Trans Am on its hood. John blinked.
