A good weekend, the first in a while. Friday was uneventful. I came home to find the Un-FunDUHmentalists already in my home. I showed restraint and I didnt get involved in any of the discussions already going on and it wasnt until around 9 when they were watching news coverage of New Orleans that they made the comment.. something to the effect of ( Read more... )

Over at my parents' place this weekend, I got kinda deep into the hurricane coverage. I was glad to see that they pretty much agreed with me on it, although my dad didn't think the blame went as far as I thought it did, eheh ( ... )

You forgot about the USS Cole and many US embassy bombings. Somalia and Kosovo weren't exactly picnics either. Besides, what does it matter 'who' we are being blown-up by. Being blown-up is still being blown-up ( ... )

Well, it's true, there was the Cole, there was the attempt on the WTC, there was Kosovo and so on, but it wasn't anything on par with the Iraq stuff (or 9/11 for that matter).

And it's entirely possible that Clinton was just lucky enough to be president at a time when the economy skyrocketed (and I would attribute a bit of that to cooked books and a lot of that to stupid investors), but hey, it went away pretty quickly after he was out of office.

I would agree that the country obviously had Christian influences, but I think that separation of church and state was deliberate and for a specific purpose and that my parents don't seem to grasp that.

I'm not really sure what I consider myself (although I'm a registered Dem). I don't agree with the party line on every thing and generally consider myself a moderate, but yeah, I guess in my parents' view I'm radical. ;)

.. something to the effect of this happened to those people because of the homosexuality and abortion going on...

Wow, I guess he liked that one crazy preach was saying when the two planes drove into WTC. I believe it was "God was punishing us because women were working and not in the kitchen" or something crazy like that. It's people like them that make me want to call myself something other than Republican or Conservative.

I couldnt keep my mouth closed if I was there. I think I would have played the roll as the "crazy sinful liberal", something along the lines of "it would have been better if the Muslims killed all of the Crusaders, than traveled West for the rest of you infidels.", not that liberals believe that, but I am sure your "friends" are thinking that.

Yeah, the park was awesome. Very relaxing. We should do it again, but with meat. :-)

Whats scary is that Milt was normal, he was a Marine in Nam with my dad. And when he got out he was looking for direction I guess. He met Barb and she was all involved with the church and that was the end of it. Swearin drinkin fun loving Milt became Fundamentalist Milt.

After too many screaming matches with Dad about our political viewpoints and the fact that you may was well be arguing with a wall when it comes to talking to religious fanatics. I just left the room, but I was boiling.

Sometimes I wonder if it is are feeling of hopelessness in any confrontation with fanatics that is our weakness, in allowing them to continue to have these beliefs withoug any counterpoint or debate... without the introduction of another perspective.

I dunno, sometimes I honestly wonder how much you can actually change someone's mind with just words. I know if I'm talking to my mom about stuff, her eyes will eventually glaze over a bit or she'll just play along until I drop it. In our whole debate, my dad conveniently had to go downstairs to get milk and it was a different topic when he came back.
