Since he'd run into Temari the first week of his final year, Shikamaru's head had been all over the place. It didn't help that what seemed to be the most mundane and uncomplicated relationship he'd ever had---one he probably would have even settled with seemed not enough.

To make matters even more of a headache, Temari had actually given him her ( Read more... )

Temari was sure she looked comfortable, sitting leisurely at a small table in her dress, leggings, and tall boots, her hair done up in a loose knot at the nape of her neck. She was certain, however, that she did not feel comfortable.

Waiting for Shikamaru, who was late (this much was to be expected - he'd never held punctuality at the top of his list of priorities), proved to be more nerve-wracking than she'd expected. She wasn't sure what to think. She wasn't sure why she'd agreed to have lunch with him. She wasn't sure why she'd even asked him to call her in the first place. She wasn't sure about a lot of things anymore, but she'd deal with them one at a time.

She was biding her time by reading the Konoha newspaper. She had it spread out on the table in front of her, and she was currently in the middle of reading the business section.

Shikamaru usually didn't put much thought into his attire, and even when he'd just thrown something on, today it seemed to matter. The impression had to be made. The fact that he was even caring, proved to him that that little spark that had erupted when he'd seen her last wasn't just a fluke.

Taking a nice lingering inhale and exhale of his cigarette, Shikamaru dropped the nicotine to the ground crushing it with his boot before walking into the cafe.

His eyes instantly found her, paper sprawled out and her attentions on it. With his hands in his pockets, Shikamaru stalled for a moment wondering if he really should just bail. No one would blame him if he did, but he would look like an absolute douchebag, and a coward. Did it really matter?

Releasing a heavy sigh, he finally advanced forward, his feet dragging against the floor in that slow walk.

There was a small crease between Temari's brows as she read, evidence of her concentration. It was true that trade between Konoha and Suna was on the rise, but that didn't mean that everything was all sunshine and roses. There was still tension between the Daimyos, no matter how well the Kages seemed to get along. Even then, Temari was still the new kid, and a true kid at that, and most of the other Kages were still skeptical about her. This quote from the current Hokage about her said as much.

Slightly annoyed, she shut the paper and folded it in half, sliding it to the side of the table. She looked up to find the clock, only to see Shikamaru walking towards her like he was walking down death row. Her company couldn't be all that bad, could it? She managed to look up at the clock, anyway. At least he wasn't too late.

It seemed as if the destination was so far away until he finally reached that chair opposite to her. He pulled it out, careful not to make eye contact just yet, he could get lost in those eyes again.

Taking a seat, Shikamaru, crossed one leg over the other, his hands resting on his leg as he finally greeted her with an expression that didn't look like he was suffering a headache, or as Naruto would say, constipation.

"You're here," he noted as if he was surprised she'd actually showed.

Damnit, he'd even put on cologne, and perhaps a little bit too much when the bottle all but spilled over him.
