As I'm sure many of you could see a'coming ... I've now been sucked into Supernatural.

There are four seasons of SPN, three are available on DVD at the moment and the last one gets released September 1. YOU NEED TO GET CAUGHT UP BEFORE WATCHING S5. Not just cause you'd be spoiled all to hell for some really good moments, but also because I don't think Season 5 will make a lick of sense to you otherwise.
Also, I think your personal goal is wise as far as waiting until you've watched S1 before you get too into fanfic. I'll rec you some good Season 1 stuff to get you started whenever you're ready to eat the cookies turn to the dark side.

I love the show. Season 5 is this fall - three seasons are on DVD.
The fandom can be...odd (it's the only place I've ever been called a homophobe -- I'm not a huge fan of incest)
