I think the best thing to do is encourage him to be enthusiastic about his craft, what he wants to write, and why he wants to do the course. If buzz words are fashionable in Liverpool, they are probably so up their own arses he will not have the patience to stick it out.
Sincere enthusiasm will count for much more than a thousand buzz words and key phrases. (As you should well know!) If they don't want him, it's their loss, not his!
Excellent advice, just a little more, enthusiasm about the University as well, find out who is teaching mainly, but know what is going on as well helps loads. I know they will ask why he wants to be at Liverpool uni. The answer is not because it is closest.
