I just finished (although it's been out for several years now) I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb. Truthfully, I picked it up because of the title being a Spandau Ballet lyric... I didn't read it sooner because I thought Lamb would be too chick lit for me. But I was wrong! I thought it was a great read... long, but it went by quickly.
I'd recommend The Death of Achilles by Boris Akunin, its an interesting murder mystery set against 19th century russia. Even though the work was originally in Russian, the translation to english was still visually very good.
Related to a Handmaiden's tale, Oryx and Crake is another currently very apt Margaret Attwood book about a future society.
For something non-fiction wise, i'd definitely recommend Paul Krugman's Return of Depression Economics and Naomi Klein's shock doctrine.
