Check out "Centennial" by James Michener. Seriously. One of my favorite books. And fits your criteria perfectly: modern (1976), great characters, history, and science. Historical fiction. Fantastic. And they they made a miniseries in the 1978, which they finally released on DVD. Very faithful adaptation.

If you go with Kerouac read "The Dharma Bums." Pete and Maura recommended it to me and they were right. It's far superior to the more famous "On the Road." Their song "Midnight Ghost" is based on it. I loved it, it's a modern "Walden." You'll love the way the book makes you feel. Where else are you going to get tips on Buddhism and deep woods hiking including making chocolate pudding with snow.

I love most of those same books you mentioned.

"The Help" by Stockett is good. I loved "Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie" and "The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag" is the #2 book in the series and it's great, too. If you love that series, you should also try "The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate." Also, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is good and the other two books in that series are out as well now. The heroine in those books is possibly the coolest heroine I've ever read. "The Forgotten Garden" is another good one. If you're into YA Fic, "Savvy" is one of the best YA fics I've read in a long time. I also love "The Giver" series for YA fic.

Do *NOT* waste your time or money on the new Dan Brown book. Horrible waste of $30, even if I got it to read on an airplane.

If you haven't read Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" you need to. I also suggest Sheri S. Tepper's "The Gate to Womens' Country. They are kind of related, but not officially. Kind of 2 possibilities given the same basic situation.

Neither are parts of series...Map of Bones kind of is, but I didn't know that til after I suggested it...I think I have the next one...I'll look for it and pass it on.
