Hi Shannon!
I liked the part where it's hinted that Wicks promoted Lou's earlier than usual because DeWitt had taken a liking on her. It's a "nice" twisted touch.
Lou is really too naive and trusting, especially after what a man so very similar to DeWitt did to her !!

Thanks Paola! I wasn't sure if that hint would come across or not, the reader will learn more later on, I'm just not sure at what point yet. Yes, Louise is still very naive but in her defense, Dewitt's behavior towards her is completely different than Wicks. I think Lou learned very quickly that Wicks was not a good man but she was sort of stuck where she was. Dewitt is definitely a wolf in sheep's clothing, he acts the gentleman, even to those who know him better (we will see that more when they get to St. Louis) and he's charming and showing interest in Lou in a way Wicks never would have. I think Wicks was very strict boss from the start, though not abusive until it was time to promote. I think from day one, he made sure the new girls had a bit of fear from him, just enough to keep them in line but not enough to cause them to run off. Dewitt is treating Louise with respect and more importantly, he's making himself the shoulder she desperately needs to cry on. She's yet to truly grieve over what happened because Charlotte had to ( ... )
