Most people in India as far as I have seen only watch football or get excited about it once in 4 years during the world cup. During this time, it's quite common to support the traditional power houses of football i.e brazil , argentina.
Also, most people tend to rant about the game..as if it's second nature to them..yet few play the sport or follow ( Read more... )

It's our culture as a nation. We lack the focus to be able to excel. "Chalta hai" is the national motto. We cut corners, and are satisfied with second or third best. We don't have the killer instinct that's required in such a competitive area.

But if you look at cricket .. and how it has been brought forward over the years, we definitely do have wat it takes to make any sport a success.
I think it comes down to the people regulating and managing the sport. Take hockey, which was once a well played and followed sport across india is confined to small circles not because of the lack of interest, but the way in which the sport has been promoted.
