Apparently it's not very easy to get your stuff off of typepad and into wordpress. They do a lot of non-standard stuff that has to be converted over, images are a problem if not handled correctly, and they prevent you from exporting your entire blog in one shot. Only a 100 entries at a time or something like that. A number of developer websites outline the problems, but this site explains it well t: http://foliovision.com/2008/11/17/typepad-to-wordpress/
wordpress is something I've used quite a bit, and I like it. If you want a test platform, I could easily set one up for you on my server. It would take all of 20 minutes. If that.
