If you've got enough work to justify a stand alone book...call it 200 pages?....then I'd advocate that route. Less need to conform to someone else's imposed theme for anthologies so you can write what you choose to (which will hopefully still sell) and less comparison to others works (either bleh, or overshadowing your own).

You do lose out on some buyers who're interested in the whole anthology compilation aspect, or potentially some sales that other authors names might bring in.

Orrrrrr perhaps you should, like...ask publishers. Or people who've had stories published.

Just sayin'.

Also, why are you asking HERE? You have twice as many watchers on FA, and probably four times based ones that are actively USING it.

I'm going the anthology route first. It's not impossible to garner success with a novel from the get go but I think publishers are getting more nervous about investing in someone who they've never heard of. If you do go that route I've heard that it's one part luck and also has to be accompanied with a DAMN good cover letter that makes it stand out from the rest of the slush pile.

Or. You know. You could just take a nap. ZHEN FIRE ZE MISSILES!!

I'd say go for the standalone book!

Even though I can say from my own experience that finding a publisher is a bitch! <.
