What I'm doing here

So.  I haven't posted here in over a year, so why the random pop-in last night?  Well.  It all has to do with Twitter.  Kind of ( Read more... )

when I logged back in I was un-surprised to find that of the last 50 posts, all but a handful were either automatic re-tweets or from one brave soul who seems to refuse to give up on actually using LJ as a journal.

Hmm, I wonder who that is. Jokes aside, there's a number of users that are still active, actually, although it's true that many folks have left.

What ends up happening is that you get an enormous breadth of information that is incredibly shallow [...] it's impossible to share what you are thinking or feeling other than a painfully short synopsis. It winds up presenting little more than a veneer of the tweeter, only the vaguest impression of who someone is and what they are thinking and feeling. Building any kind of community on these thin veneers results in a community that is as shallow as the tweets themselves.Well said. Twitter has its uses, but it's not a substitute for blogging/journaling any more than flirting with a stranger on the bus is a substitute for a lasting and committed relationship ( ... )

I tend to use LJ to provide the quick update for those people who are still interested in my life, mostly because I refuse to post anything that private on Facebook. I don't know if I'm that one soul, but I do know of a few others who continue to use this, despite the fact that it feels like we're talking to an empty room. It's just a lot better hearing the occasional echo of something deep, then the multitude of shallow statements that Twitter has become. (Don't get me wrong; I use and occasionally enjoy Twitter, but I never expect anything deep to be shared via Twitter.)

I'm still here to hear you, and I do miss seeing you. I'd even post here if I had anything worth saying.

I may not be posting here much at all, but I've never really stopped checking in to LJ to see what's going on. I can certainly understand your issues with Twitter, though, and I'm glad you're feeling good about your decision!

Myself, I feel like I'm always writing too few words with livejournal, but I really don't like padding it out. If I have a topic to expound on, it works a lot better, but I don't usually feel that way. :)

I don't really post anymore, for some reason I just stopped entirely after my big move out here to California. But I do still check the friends list for posts every few days, just in case. So, some people still hear. :)
