Because phobias are not funny... anonymous July 16 2011, 23:56:48 UTC
Really not. I'm arachnophobic to a point where I can have a full-blown panic attack just by looking at them, and people find it so fucking amusing, to them it's like the best show ever.

Anyway.
I want Sherlock (or John? Whoever you want)to be phobic of something harmless and probably a bit ridiculous (Inofensive insects? Clowns? Dolls? Ducks? idk)and someone making fun of them because of it, even throwing this 'something' into his face just for a laugh.

And then I want BAMF John (or Sherlock) to ****fucking tear them a new arsehole****. Figuratively or not. So they get that when someone is phobic, they're actually panicking and not putting on a show for them to enjoy.
Godfuckingdamnit.

As someone who occasionally gets mocked because of an intense fear of Bridges and insects of all kind, I completely second this.

My headcanon is that Sherlock is afraid of clowns.

But yeah, I'm extremely afraid of heights. No joke; I once cried my eyes out in elementary school when I once had to climb a ladder backwards so that I was facing outwards. Spiral staircases are evil. And I inwardly panic when riding over bridges.

Jesus fucking Christ. I'm so sorry. I'm not that bad with heights in general but I am shit with ladders (can't get past the second rung without getting vertigo). I can't imagine having to do that. @_@

Yeah, I even told them I was deathly afraid, and they peer pressured me into it! I mean, I'm okay climbing them regularly; it's less height and more steepness that I can't handle. I don't think I even made it that high up, maybe three rungs or so? (I'm also leaving out a few details which may or may not have made the story even worse, eg. what the ladder led up to.)

Definitely seconded. I would love to see this.

I'm terrified of heights. I was in a museum once where the fifth floor had a glass floor, over an open-space area that went all the way down to the ground floor. My stepfather pitched a fit and forced me to go up there. Needless to say, it wasn't fun.

Thirded!

God, I hate glass floors. And glass balcony walls. And those stairs with a gap instead of a riser... I have a suspicion that I don't have the normal type of vertigo, it's less about absolute height and more about whether I might fall or slip or something - consequently I'm fine with scrambling up a pile of boulders on a beach as long as my brain thinks they're stable, but get me near a cliff edge or something that's been painstakingly engineered to be safe but look unsafe, and my brain hits the panic button!

That's called gravitational insecurity.

Thank you so much for this - it may also explain why I could never learn to "spot" while dancing (I always found it easier to deal with dizzyness after pirouettes than to leave my head in place for as long as possible before whipping it around).

Also, from the links I found while investigating this, I'm starting to wonder more seriously about whether I fit somewhere on the Aspergers scale, as there are a number of other things that sound very familiar, but I'd assumed everyone else was dealing with too...

If you wonder at all, I highly recommend buying the book Aspergirls. Great for any woman with social insecurity. I love that book. It's informational and supportive and good for self esteem.

I started wondering about myself because my five year old has some major quirks, and her little sister, who is three, is passing her by in some areas. Parenting is harder since I didn't know anything about typical kids before I had them! My five year old is in occupational therapy and loving it. The Wilbarger brushing is amazing and doing wonders for me as well.

Seconded. Or whatever-number-we're-on-ed.

I have a phobia of bees. You can imagine the horrid sound I made when I found out about Holmes beekeeping in Sussex. :-/

Oh yeah, I hate bees. When I was a young child, I once accidentally stepped into a pile of them... wearing sandals.

Really almost all bugs in general, but the stinging ones... not so good.

Seconding!! I have a /legit/ phobia of spirals, and every time people find out they all suddenly feel the need to start drawing them and shoving them them in my face -- almost walked out of class once when the professor started doing it too, mostly because I was very near full blown panic attack. Seriously wtf is wrong with people???

Alright - not mocking or teasing or anything but - spirals?
I'm really curious - what do you find scary/unnerving about them?
(I'm serious, this is legitimate confusion and curiosity and feel free to tell me if you don't want to talk about it)

See, if I knew exactly why they were so bad, I don't think I'd be as unnerved, they're just really horrible. They're just everywhere. You don't think they're everywhere until you have such a fear of the damned things that you can't help but notice them. I can't escape them. I literally cannot sleep in a room if I know there's a spiral shaped something in there. Sometimes I think that there's one right at the back of my head where I can't see and that's the worst.

Also reading Uzumaki /really/ didn't help. That Reeeeeally didn't help.
