I'd say that he and Helena are probably closer than you think, verbally - they just use speech differently. She has more words and uses them much more consistently than Mal does. He seems to enjoy keeping us guessing about what he knows. I'm trying not to think too much about what that implies...
I have a resident in my group home who is disabled, and her speech is an issue (she is mildly retarded with some physical disabilities, including hearing loss). She will often look at me, say "it's hard" and then refuse to continue speaking. Watching how hard it is for her to make speech happen has really made me more aware of what toddlers have to learn. This speaking stuff really IS hard!

It sounds like he's much farther along verbally than my punkin, though I feel you on the homework front. Bright children are a mixed blessing. :)
