No plans to leave? Oh my god how can he give up Jack? How? I'm sorry I loved the love making and the way they wanted to see how each other wrung it out when apart, but then the way Ennis thought he should give up Jack now, how can he do this when Jack is giving up his whole comfortable world for Ennis? I know Jack was leaving anyhow and all but well Ennis just cannot stay with Alma and well I don't think Alma is none to pleased to have him stay. I really think she is tired of having half of a man. Ok I'm just really upset thinking that he is going to give up on that dream.. Joe
Thank you so much for reading!! I really do apologize for the month-long delay in updating--but you can expect a new chapter tomorrow. I've got it written and am sending it to my beta right now. Hopefully we'll be able to shed some light on things there. :)
He crouched down so that they were at eye level. “I told you I was gonna do this thing with you, ‘n I mean it. But you been takin’ care a stuff here, ‘n it put me in mind a all the things I been ignorin’ back at home. Time for me to face up to what I got there. When you’re ready to go, then I will be too.”
I'm so disappointed in Ennis. He should have thought of all this before he tracked Jack down, gave him false hope, made promises and said things that can't be taken back without turning it all into a cruel joke. I knew it was a mistake, Ennis going back by himself. :-(
But we know Ennis is the one who usually has the toughest time with their relationship. In some ways, I was worried that I had made him acquiesce to the "sweet life" too quickly--both he and Jack know that things never work out as easily as you would hope. Thanks so much for reading and commenting--and look for the update tomorrow. :)
Knowing things will not be easy is one thing, but this sounds like Ennis has no intention of them being at all, easy or not. Ennis promised Jack he would be back for him, and now he's all but promising Alma he won't leave her. He can't do both, so he's lying to one of them. As much as I never really cared for Alma, she doesn't deserve this, and Jack sure doesn't.
Looking forward to the next chapter! I keep thinking that Ennis can't possibly dig himself in any deeper, but then I know that if anyone can, it will be Ennis and his fears. *grin*

Hi Lindsey, Strangely, I too felt frustrated with Ennis here. He doesn't always do what I think he will in these chapters. But the road they've traveled has been a tough one, and it isn't quite over yet. Hopefully the new chapter will help to clear up these problems a little. Look for it tomorrow--and I'm off work next week so I'll be posting at least one, hopefully two, new chapters then. :) Thanks for reading!!
Going Down in Rivertoncwby30March 1 2007, 16:36:33 UTC
Mornin'.
Say it isn't so! Ennis is conflicted, but damnit he made a promise to Jack...and in his heart he knows where he belongs. Time to stand up and be a man, Ennis, and look Alma in the eye and do what is right for all of you, and avoid ruining their lives further.
Alma knows; she saw what she saw. She isn't doing herself or anyone else any favors, either, by holding on to what she knows isn't there any more.
Jack has burned his bridges, and will be leaving Lureen. What happens when Jack calls Ennis to tell him he's ready? Or, when Jack shows up in Riverton to start their lives together?
Don't have a good feeling after this chapter...unlike most of the others. Hope you don't make us wait too long for the next chapter. So much to take care of.
Good story, good writing, stirring up lots of emotions in us, your readers. Thanks.

Mornin', again.
Reviewed the story, and I do have hope...Your Christmas story was set in 1971, and the two of them were together at Christmas in their own home, with all three kids there.
So, I'll still look for the ending that will be, after all the heartbreak that has to be while breaking those chains constricting them and holding them back ferom each other.
Something worth having that much is worth working very hard to get.

Indeed! I had planned that people could take hope from that interlude--clearly they do stay together. I've always been in favor of a happy ending for these two. But the road is long and not always pleasant along the way. Thank you again for your comments.

Thanks for reading and for taking so much time to comment--it really means a lot to me. I'm sorry about the really long delay in updating; RL hit me with a hammer this month. But new chapter will be up tomorrow--it's all written already. I too didn't feel good about this chapter, but this is what the muse told me they would do, so I had to go with it. Hopefully the update will clear up some of these issues. :)
Going Down, Chapter 16 - Lord, I feel like crying.....ennis4meMarch 1 2007, 16:41:01 UTC
But I have a really hopeful feeling....
Ennis is caught up in the thick (VERY thick) emotion of seeing his daughters again...and I had a feeling that if he went back alone, he would flounder....
Because he is a loving father, and a good man, who wants to fulfill his obligations, not put his own needs first.
Now that I'm going to walk around all day with head low (it's amazing how this stuff hits me sometimes), I'm going to keep thinking that he will come to understand that his happiness will be better for everyone....living a falsehood is not good for anyone...and the fact that Ennis was almost sick on his way home proves how much he needs Jack....
he will not be able to "deal"....Jack is his oxygen, his energy, his soul.
Hurry back - please!!! Beautiful writing and phrasing.... Thanks so much for your story....Adrianne

Thanks so much for reading--I'm glad you are enjoying it. The long wait is finally over--new chapter will be up tomorrow. The emotional climate here is very complicated since so many people are involved, and that's what I was really trying to communicate. Hope some of these problems are cleared up in the update--and next week's chapter should help as well. :)
