I'm so excited to see a new chapter of this story. I love it! Have a great spring break and I'm looking forward to the next chapter. I hope Ennis has the cajones to go with Jack.
I owe a big thanks to Christie for this one: she thought Jack should stand up to Ennis more in this scene, and she was totally right. It's obviously something that Ennis finds sexy in him as well. Thanks for reading--new chapter will be up soon. : )

at what you have in store for us at the next chapter. Please, please, please, don't have Ennis stay separated from Jack....I think that will not only kill him, but it will kill us, too

Thanks so much for your comments. You're right; these parting scenes are especially tough to write, because there has to be a good balance between their love for each other and their love for their kids. And of course neither man wants to hurt his wife more than he has to. So I find it complicated to work out--hope you enjoy the new chapter. best, shieldmaid
I can't tell you how happy I was to see your update. This is incredible. You are one of the best writers on bbm and this chapter is proof. The imagery in the beginning is stunning as Jack hears his son's laughter-- you capture that snapshot of his life, Jack's emotions. His ache and regret along with his happiness that comes with such a cost. Thanks so much for continuing.
Wow, I am mightily touched by your comments--that is such a kind thing to say, especially in a fandom that includes MadLori, Maggie, Jenna, midwest-girl, cathalin, etc., etc. . . . I get such pleasure out of belonging to this community and writing for it; thanks so much for reading. New chapter should be up quite soon.
What isn't brokencwby30March 30 2007, 16:10:42 UTC
Mornin'.
Good title. What was broken? The promise that Ennis made to Jack, Ennis' heart [shards of his heart, from Chapter 16], Ennis' self-confidence [how can Alma look down on him, calling him a mere "ranch stiff"?! Already she has become cold to Ennis.], Jack's life in Childress, the trust between them, maybe Jack's heart, and at the end Alma and "something glass broke inside". The last sentence fit the title perfectly.
Ennis is so conflicted, while Jack knows what he wants. Good take on what could have happened, if Jack had left Lureen after the first reunion. Like where you're going with it, and like the talk between Ennis and Jack.
Don't stop here...we need the next two chapters quick...know it won't be easy, but Alma saw them at the reunion not too long ago, and seeing Jack in her kitchen she must realize what's going on.

Thank you for your kind comments. You know, I always struggle with the titles; I want them to be abstract yet specific enough to capture some essence of the chapter. I'm so glad you liked this one. Thanks for reading; the new chapter will be up soon. :)
