Things that make me go Hulk Smash (No Actual Avengers Content)

May 06, 2012 16:03

One of the things I've found the longer I am in fandom - especially the longer I'm in parcipatory fandoms and not just reading/watching things without interacting directly with others - is that my patience for offensive bullshit decreases by the second. And by orders of magnitude ( Read more... )

fandom, be better fandom, sort of meta?

Ugh, yes. I actually got into fandom (as a lurker) through U2 fic and it was definitely where I worked through a lot of my WTF feelings about Real People's relationships and fictional representations. I'm still a little surprised by how often partners are disappeared in hockey fic (I don't know, in a Dan Savage GGG world, a road exception seems pretty not-implausible to me)... but I can roll with it.

I've also never understood how people who claim to like a person or a character can be equally as invested in hating the people that person has chosen to have a relationship with and therefore could be fairly safely assumed to be "someone they enjoy spending time with".
This. Also, complex backstory and complicated people are good for fic, yes?

aHA, I thought I remembered your username from other places, too! *high-fives* For me, I've been finding it more complicated in hockey than, say, bandom (my most recent other fannish referant) to figure out how I want to deal with people's real partners, because most of them really aren't public figures in similar ways to, eg, Lyn-Z and Z Berg and so on. Road exceptions really do seem like they'd be way more freaking likely than we maybe give credit for, I gotta say. (Although that being said, every now and then I catch myself wondering exactly how much time they'd really have to hook up on the road with curfews and everything they actually have to do jobwise, but I'm sure it does happen for a lot of guys regardless, heh.)

And a million times yes to that, too! Exactly!

I think you're spot on with all of that, yep. And exactly. And UGH re the last line, because... agreed. Sigh. :/ Mostly I just hope if we all keep pointing it out when we see it that people will learn, at least.

indeed!

...oh god, that just reminds me that there was definitely a point in one of the games I watched this weekend where the commentary referred to a guy's stick as his "magic wand". /o\ LOLOLOLOHGOD.

Thank you for this. I think it fits into a trope often found in het romance novels, where All (Other) Women Are Evil - and I really dislike it there too. Like you said, it's lazy storytelling; and it's depressing when a mainly-female space like fandom turns all misogynistic and horrible.

Oh, that is a really good point I hadn't identified here at all and I think you're totally right about that, too -- I wouldn't be at all surprised if that contributes, because so much of the fic that I write and read shares a LOT of tropes with romance novels, so I bet there's bleedover in that regard, too. And I really hate that trope there, as well as the one where (did we discuss this past last week? I feel like maybe we did?) the main protagonist in the romance novels especially basically has No Friends and therefore must depend on the Object of Affection for all her relationship needs as well as the romance sides. Ugggggh.

I think we did talk about Harriet No-Mates, yeah -- and I think, like, in good romance novels, Our Heroine DOES have female friends and they, like, hang out to paint their nails and talk about boys and/or drink shitty vodka and prank-call Those Who Have Wronged Them ( ... )

Hooray, I didn't misremember that! But yes, absolutely and exactly.

And yeah, that's such a huge part of why it both stands out all the more and makes me even more furious, because it's just like "...oh great, there's only one lady in this whole thing and I'm meant to loathe her? Thanks. :("

Oh good grief, yeah, that would be wicked frustrating. :( I'm so fucking sick of women being defined by their menfolk/potential menfolk. IT'S 2012 JFC.

Hee, yeah, too true. And I enjoy the fuck out of a lot of those things, I just wish we could all be more consistent about only uplifting the good parts and leave the shitty bits on the slush heap where they belong.
