There was a cool breeze blowing as they sat on the pier, neither willing to break the silence. They were both upset due to their own reasons and it seemed that they weren’t able to voice them out. However, Onew spoke up a while later. “Kibummie, you do know that I have to go. Please, baby. Why can’t you wish me a safe journey instead? It’s not like I’m going to go anywhere too far,” Onew pleaded with his boyfriend of two years.
Key pouts, his hand squeezing Onew’s tightly. “I’m really going to miss you, Jinki. I wish you didn’t have to go. I love you so much!” Key said as he struggled to keep his tears at bay.
Jinki held back a sad sigh as he replied, “I love you too. Well, look at it this way. At least we can exchange emails and stuff! Internet has made the world so much smaller! Plus I promise to give you my address and phone number and everything!”
Key nodded without looking up, unable to meet Onew’s eyes. He gave Onew a warm hug while the elder kissed his forehead before he slowly let go. As he looked up, Onew could see the tears glistening in his eyes. ‘Oh God, forgive me for lying to this beautiful boy… But I really have no choice,’ Onew thought as he leaned in to capture Key’s lips in a kiss.
----- Flashback -----
“Are you Onew Lee Jinki?” a big, burly man came up to Onew after his last class and questioned him. Feeling nervous, Onew nodded and the man gestured to follow him. Despite not wanting to, Onew didn’t know what might happen if he didn’t follow the other man’s order so he simply did as he was told.
He was led outside and up to the school parking lot where there was an expensive car located somewhere near the door leading into the building. The man went up to it and opened the door for Onew and resigning himself to his fate, whatever that would be, he stepped into the car.
It shocked him to find himself looking in the eyes of Mr Kim, the father of his boyfriend, Kim Kibum. He quickly greeted the older man with a “Mr Kim,” and a bow of sorts since it was difficult to do such a thing in such a small place like in a car.
“Mr Lee,” he started only to find Onew rapidly shaking his head.
“Please, sir. Just call me Onew,” the adorable boy smiles at the older man.
“Fine then, Onew. I would like to know why you are attached to my son. Firstly, I do not like my son being gay and you are simply encouraging him. Secondly, I know that your family are currently having financial problems. Are you using my son?” Mr Kim asked Onew, shocking the younger with the harsh questions.
Once again, Onew found himself moving his head in a rapid manner, shaking it again. “I really love Kibum, Mr Kim! I would never use him, I swear!” Onew exclaimed. “But you are right, my family is facing some financial problems at the moment,” he continued in a softer tone. Onew could see that the older man seemed to be contemplating something so he kept quiet.
After a moment, Mr Kim spoke up. “Is your family very important to you, Onew?” he said and received a nod as reply. “My family is important to me too and I believe that if Kibum stays attached to you, it would not be too good for him nor his future. So I think you know what you have to do because frankly, I will never give my blessings to your relationship,” Mr Kim continued, slowly breaking Onew’s heart with every word he uttered.
“You… You mean… You want me to break up with Kibum? But I love him, Mr Kim! I swear I won’t make use of him! Just don’t make me break up with him! I’m begging you, Mr Kim! Please don’t do this to us…” Onew cried, scrambling to kneel down to the older man in the cramped sitting area.
“Onew, I can’t stop you from staying with Kibum but if you promise to leave Kibum alone and possibly leave the country or something, I will feed your family with basic necessities for the rest of my life. I’ll even willingly pay for your studies should you agree to leave Kibum alone. If you don’t, not only will you and your family’s life be hell but I will make sure I would make Key hate you so much that he will be the one leaving you instead. So choose between your possibilities. I’ll give you some time to decide. Give me a call at my private number once you’ve decided,” Mr Kim said, handing his business card to Onew before dismissing the boy with a wave of his hand.
Numb, Onew stepped out of the car and slowly walked back into the school. As he aimlessly walked around the empty corridors, tears rolled down his cheeks. He was surprised when he found himself at the door of Key’s dance rehearsal room a few minutes later, his walking around apparently not as aimless as he thought.
As he stared through the windows of the room, his heart ached but resolutely, he made up his mind. ‘I’m so sorry, Kibum. I’m sure you’ll find someone better to take care of you one day. I’m always going to love you, no matter how far apart we are,’ Onew thought to himself, willing Key to understand the actions that he would take.
----- Present -----
It has been a year since he left Key for the States. It’s been a year since he’d last seen or properly chatted to him. It’s been a year since he’d last hugged the beautiful boy. It’s been a year since he’d last kissed him. It’s been a year since he’d last told the younger boy that he loved him.
