This was so lovely!
... and I really like the fact that you never wrote anything about how Bonnie or Jeremy died. In most stories that stretch over so long a timeframe, the deaths of the humans pop up some time or another (even in one of my own stories).
So I think that you left that out was a nice touch.
Everything else was quite perfect too - the way Elena got to live her life and still Damon always came back; how in the end she decided she had been single-Elena long enough and went and searched for him. How she didn't seem to doubt for a minute that he would welcome her... *sigh*.

I honestly think that this is one of the best D/E fics I've ever read. It was just wonderful. My favorite part was:

"So what? Fuck it," he’d said. "Whatever this is already looks like more fun than hanging out with any of those people. What are we doing, crying in an empty bathtub about how we're old and life's unfair? I'm in."

It was so remarkably Damon. All of it was. He really would wait for her for forever wouldn't he?

I think Damon would wait and give her time. I don't think he'd wait alone but I think he'd give her space. ;p

I guess she needs to be selfish because she knows when it's time it will be forever. Loved the way you wrote Damon, his patience and his humor and even his despair.

So there is just this feeling here, and when I read it before, that I believe Marta would call "mood" and as I'm not really a mood girl/writer, I think it's important to really note it when I pick up on it. The complete comfortableness between them, and how it only increases over time is just...there is no way to teach someone how to do that sort of thing with their writing. You just do it so naturally, and it makes the whole story feel so real. It's like, of course this is what happened, what else could have possibly? There is just nothing, this is the only possible outcome

I think a together-forever outcome is the only way for them in the long run, too, so this was such a challenge to figure out how to accomplish the on-and-off aspect.
