My favorite video this year (of my own):
I really can't split these three.
"Say When"- Buffy-
This is one of the most recent videos I have made and I absolutely adore it. I have recently acquired so much love for this couple and this video captures every single Spuffy related fangirl squee I had and how I viewed there relationship. You gotta love a video that turns out exactly how you invisioned all along.
"Tick Tick Boom"- AFL St Kilda Saints-
I made a few AFL videos this year but this is without a doubt my favourite. At the time we had just win our 12th game in a row and the love for my team was unbelievably overwhelming that I had to make a tribute to those games (most of which I was in attendance).
This video also got me a meeting with the media manager at the St Kilda Football Club. Though nothing eventuated from that meeting I learned a few incredible things...the most incredible being that the coach of St Kilda had seen them and was impressed with my work.
"Time is Running Out"- Harper's Island-
Right before the finale aired I decided to make a "this is what has happened on Harper's Island so far" video. It ended up being my favourite I made for the show as well as being on of my best edited videos for the year. It's got action, horror, drama, romance...the total package and I love it for because it was only supposed to be self-indulgent and ended up being better than I could've ever expected.
Honorable Mentions: Running Up That Hill (Twin Peaks), Toxic Faint (The Faculty) and All My Life (AFL).
My least favorite video this year:
"With Me"- Graduation-
Beautiful movie, beautiful ship...FAIL OF A VIDEO. This one comes to mind because I slapped it together in a day and tried very little to make it good. I mean, it has meaning to me for other reasons, but as a video it was very weak.
My best video this year:
A few candidates that I cannot seperate.
"Say When"- Buffy-
A recent video that I LOVE. Editing-wise I felt it was incredibly strong and it turned out exactly how I invisioned. It is light on effects and is simply a video trying to tell the story of Buffy/Spike without 'sexxin it up' or making their relationship feel like a cheesy romcom. I feel I succeeded and I love the result.
"Sea Lion"- Twin Peaks: Fire, Walk with Me-
The months prior to this video I had been working with effects, overlays and a few different things I hadn't really dared to try before. So after months of experimentation I applied what I learnt and thought would work into this video while trying to create something meaningful and dark. I really love how it turned out.
"Precious"- Supernatural-
I love this video and the way its constructed. After doing the 2008 vidding meme I decided I neeed to try out the tricky motion principle I'd vowed to make myself familiar with and try something new. This video was the product of that.
My worst video this year:
"Good Vibrations"- 90210-
I don't hate it...it's just not very good. Another one I slapped together in a day because I loved the episode so much.
"With Me"- Graduation-
The source material was really hard to work with and somehow that translated to an all round crap video. Mainly because once the source mateiral started to become dififcult, I gave up on trying. Great movie however.
Video most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
This is a hard question because most of my videos didn't recieve any LJ feedback, so I can't really judge. However, I was really disapppointed that I got no comments on LJ for "Say When". I felt really proud of that video and I feel it was underappreciated. It got quite a lot of love on YouTube though :)
Most fun video:
"Sexy Bitch"- Twin Peaks-
I had so much fun making this video. The whole idea for it was devised by me and one of my best friends over MSN while bitching about how much we hated James Hurley. I mean, the video is a giant in-joke between the two of us but it was so easy to make and I loved every minute of it (even though I am a violent hater of James). The effects are cheesy as hell and suck beyond comprehension but we still refer to James as a "sexy bitch" because of this video.
"The Safety Dance"- Multi-Movies-
My favourite song about dancing made into a redux of my video from last year. I love this video and the editing and the song choice and the choice of movies. I was never really 100% happy with "Just Dance". Considering how much time and effort I put into ripping, I just felt it fell short of expectation, hence I decided to make this video. So much love.
Hardest video to make:
"Sea Lion"- Twin Peaks: Fire, Walk With Me-
Fire, Walk with Me is unlike anything I've ever seen (including the show its based on). Trying to capture the emotion, the fear, the loneliness as well as the bizarre and downright frightening...it took a lot out of me. I knew if I was going to use the song that I had to make the video something special as a tribute to the awesomeness to the song and all its potential. It also dealt with some subject matter that I usually avoid in vidding; drug use, graphic sex, disturbing violence...as well as the tricky theme of incest. So emotionally it was hard to make...plus the editing took me a long time to get a handle on.
Most unintentionally telling video:
In an attempt to not use "Sea Lion" again as an answer...
"Scar Tissue"- Breaking Bad-
This is probably the most emotional video I did this year. I absolutely adore the raw emotional appeal of this show plus its incredible uniqueness. I absolutely adore the character this video is based on and I couldn't not make a video about Jesse considering the many addictions he falls victim to through the course of the first two seasons. I, personally, look at this video and for a few minutes get insight into a world I have never entered. The incredble loneliness. It's something I saw on the show but seeing it all together at once...it just makes me think about the power of addiction and the incredble courage it takes to bring yourself back from something of that nature.
Most successful video:
"Animal I Have Become"- Harper's Island-
I made this video a few days after the finale of Harper's Island had aired and the killer was revealed, hence the success. Upon the huge reveal I wanted to make a video about the character while showing clues and things I missed during the course of the show that related to the reveal of the killer. I also wanted to show the red herrings that were presented to the audience throughout the show's run. Oh and this is one of the first times I ever added voice overs in the middle of a video. I'm not the greatest at it, but it was a lot of fun to work through. High view count and comment count as well as lots of people sending me messages on YouTube about wanting to download the video.
Biggest vid FAIL:
My Cordelia/Xander videos in general. I usually make one a year because they are one of my all-time favourite ships....and yet I am completely incapable of vidding them well. "You're All I Have" was this years example. Don't get me wrong, I really like the video, but I just think its a vidding fail that these videos never turn out how I expect.
Most Kick Ass Moment:
"All My Life"- AFL St Kilda Saints-
0:58-1:00- Sam Gilbert throws Matthew Stokes (like he weighs next to nothing) into the fence and stares him down. Epic moment of superiority.
Single Sexiest Moment/Video:
Any Harper's Island- Jimmy/Abby video I made. What can I say, CJ Thomason (Jimmy Mance) is freakin' gorgeous ;)
Close second to "Cobra Style" a Harper's Island video about Matt Barr's character Sully.
Vidding in 2009:
I think the main thing I learnt about vidding this year was that being a film student REALLY inspires me to edit (hence the record amount of videos). With all that editing experience I think I finally feel like I am improving. I mean, I know I fail at fundemental concepts related to motion and musicality...but I think this year I got closer to that than I ever have before. One day I'm sure I'll produce something epic.
Vidding in 2010:
I need to keep improving and get better. So much better. I have still have very little patience to consistantly use the principals of musicality, movement and intricate lyrical interpretation. I will work on that and hopefully make better and more interesting videos next year (while being completely self-indulgent regardless of how much love is out there for a fandom *cough* Twin Peaks *cough*).
I also think I need to abandon the "slapping together in one day" mentality. If a video is to be good, it needs time, it needs planning...what it doesn't need is me going into the program with half an idea and wanting the video out of the way by the end of the day.
I think I mainly want to make videos that people remember and look forward to.
Vidding Projects in the Works Right Now:
I really want to remaster my 2005 "Cherry Lips" Spike/Buffy video. When I re-watched Buffy I was looking through all of my old videos and I really liked the concept of "Cherry Lips"... just the execution was far off. Not to mention the out of time "rainbows would appear" lyric with the colour matte flashes- that gets to me everytime!
