Are you really that excellent - or is someone just making you up to confuse me?

If you hate it, if it doesn't work for you--well, hell, you can save up some money and then look for a different job. It isn't a marriage. You can do just what you did to get out of ChainBookshop. You can, because you have already done it.

You sound just like my mate Barbara who left Wetrocks quite recently to go to a very corporate gig translating business news into English from Italian. She was terrified to go and now that she's there she LOVES it.

Even if you don't LOVE it I'm sure you'll be more than competent at it.

It almost felt like a marriage - and also almost felt like an acrimonious divorce.

I've just worked in publishing and with books for so long now I'm in a flap about giving it all up. I LOVE books (although recently that love was starting to die somewhat)and have done since I was a little dysfunctional kid, crippled with shyness who lived through reading. Leaving that behind is both scary and like a weight off my shoulders all at the same time..

You have played nice with normal people before: Customers. Just keep reminding yourself that even though you're not in a bookstore, these people around you are all either bookstore customers or -- even more appalling -- non-customers. Your old distain for their miserable patheticness will return, no worries.

How right you are. I'm sure I'll be back to my short tempered self in a jiffy. And even if I'm not - I did have a great last week at work giving all the arsehole customers just what they deserved.

Ahh - reassuring, sage-like words that work better than a nice cup of chamomile tea...

O.M.G.!!!
Where else can you see psycho therapy in action as you watch love blossom between two young people? It makes me fel all warm inside - and I even get to gaze at Audrey hepburn, too!
I just love this LJ!!!

Oh, and 'normal' people are not really normal, y'know - just more numerous - it is not 'normal' to read Will Self and not be impressed, but sadly, so many are...

Warm insides! That's sooo much nicer than my iced over internal organs..

No fair that 'not normal' people are in the majority! How on earth will the meek inherit the earth in these conditions?

Houellbecq is, yes, good. I have his latest competing with Murakami now, and it'll probably win because it's so much easier to stick with a narrative than with short stories.

The trouble with Will Self, for me, is that in person when he turns up on whatever that famous now-presenter-less new quiz show is called, or anywhere else, he worries me greatly. Not in a specific way; it's just a kind of general moral fear. But he sure can write, yes.

I'm sure you'll survive work though. Personally I've forgotten so many names and responded to so many conversations without returning questions etc. that I know its possible to get by with limited social skills.
