These things snuck up on me! Don't they usually do them later in the year, say, first week of February? Oh well.

No big surprises, but a few small disappointments for me:
- I really thought that Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead would get nominated for his There Will Be Blood score. I've heard several people mention it as another character in ( Read more... )

As far as Jonny Greenwood:

As far as others, I can't believe Blanchett was nominated for Elizabeth. That movie was generally awful. Also, I can't say I'm surprised that they took "Michael Clayton" over "Ratatouille" but that situation still sucks. Foreign film is still idiotic. No "La Vie en Rose," no "Orphanage," no "Persepolis," no "The Host," no "Triad Election." Are these jokers for real?

Someone should find a way to give Philip Seymour Hoffman an award for "most awesome performances this year" ("Savages," "Charlie Wilson," "Before the Devil Knows"). That totally makes up for "Along Came Polly."

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)
"No Country for Old Men"

seriously...one of the most impactful things in the movie was the (lack of) any music and score

No kidding. Most of the scenes, if they had anything, just contained rattling or clicking. Anything more would have punctured the tension.

Cate Blanchett for both lead and supporting actress- hells yeah. It would be awesome to see her win both, but I doubt the Academy would be eager to do that.

Anyone else feel like the best picture movies are somewhat lackluster this year?

I'm actually happy there isn't any behemoth blistering its way through the nominations this year (see: Return of the King) Granted, these are films (with the exception of Atonement) that would normally be neglected for Best Picture noms. In a normal year, we'd see more stuff like Elizabeth Now: Redux, American Gangster, and other movies with grand scope.

It is strange, though, to see Juno and the rest back to back to back to back.

Did you see the same "Elizabeth" I did? It was really atrocious, especially the script. And Blanchett didn't really know what to do in it. That nomination is unbelievable.

If anyone deserves to win two acting Oscars this year, it's Hoffman.
