When I ran WHFRP i have to say i really appreciated it when you and alan both stepped out of the game to make way for Freshers and I still started running that campaign with 8-9 players (way over my usual max) You had both asked to play when i first mentioned running it and both let people who hadnt played before take your places, it was very cool of you. But this is (at least) the second time this had happened, maybe someone else should play the nice guy for once.
We have two games on eight players, I struggled with getting seven in a game, the other two are not hugely experienced gms so seven is the most I have asked them to take, and the other game is horror so there is no way it can get big and still be fun. I know that from experience.
I had to be the guy who dropped out this time, I was sorting people into games and it would have been unfair of me to ask someone else to drop out.
I generally max at 6, but when we had all the other games refusing to take any more and a whole bunch of freshers wanting to play. I had choice of, run a larger game or turn people away from what for several was thier first foray into tabletop RP and for most of them thier first experience of HUGs.
The game was a bit slow in places and was hard work on my part but they all seemed to enjoy it, which is why I GM.
The landlady has already offered us the use of one of her private rooms above the pub so we can have six games, asking for more is just a bit more cheeky than I'm up for. She has let claire use a spare bedroom for the horror game; best landlady. Ever.

I never run with more than 5 players, that is my rule. Anything else makes life harder for the GM and less fun for the players

Allow you to get in game and take pressure of the fuller games (presuming people are willing to move).
