This might sound odd, but I thought of Douglas Cartland for some reason. He may not be the protagonist, but he definitely has the traits of one. He's a sheerly goodhearted person - yes, he agreed to hunt down Heather for Claudia, but turned right around as soon as he realized what he was doing. He's compassionate, definitely, and willing to help others, and he seems confident, but he does have issues of his own that he doesn't let show, though he's still hardy, and violence isn't his preferred route of problem-solving, either, though he will consider it at times. And I probably would call him the opposite of Kaufmann.

I see a lot of Heather in you.

But I see even more Douglas.

This brings me much glee, because I've never voted a Douglas before and he is kind of one of my favorite characters soooooo...

I'm too tired to sum up all my thoughts, but the biggest thing that leaped out to me is that you hate being used and manipulated. Douglas feels the same way, and has obviously had his services and kindness taken advantage of before.

He's also very much a loner, and you're one of the only people I've EVER seen answer that they'd rather go it alone in Silent Hill than stay part of a group.

Furthermore, Douglas is a very mature person-- we don't ever see him let anger take over, not even when Heather is getting in his face with all her glorious teenage rage, or even when he's confronting Claudia. He's calm and level-headed, and obviously intelligent and well-mannered even if he made some mistakes in his life.

There are a few shades of Douglas, yeah, but I think he may be a bit too jaded.
Travis Grady is a much better fit, I think. You are a bit distant, and you say you're very guarded. Though, you also mention that you're polite and pretty talkative around friends and such. Your answers for the "alone or with a buddy" and "leader or follower" questions really reminded me of Travis.

I'm going to say Douglas as well. He comes off as a nice guy despite helping the order and eventually realizes he's being used, also, he keeps many secrets that he only reveals under pressure. He's not really a physical fighter and thinks things through. I'd say all that fits you very well :)
