I never see anyone eating or drinking on the tube. Is this an unwritten rule? I find it very weird because you see people eating and/or drinking on trains (even commuter trains at rush hour) but never tubes. Not even drinking coffee in the early morning. I never know whether, if I eat or drink on the tube, people will be really annoyed with me.

I guess it's because a lot of people just use it for short hops, plus space is limited. I know I've eaten on the tube a few times (usually sandwiches, once a hotpot from food for thought) and am now a bit scared I've broken some unwritten rule!

i think it's the short hop thing - you'll see more people eating outside zone 1.

Yes, if you come in from miles out - eg from Upminster on the district line as I used to do regularly on a Sunday evening years ago - there are lots of people eating, much more like an ordinary commuter train.

People eat on the bakerloo line north of paddington (and never share their chips). I've not yet encountered anyone eating on the Jubilee line.

They recommended bottles of water when summer was really hot. And they have chocolate and coke vending machines on some platforms.

So I think you can.

I've certainly eaten on it before. The main problem is that there are no bins to put rubbish in, unlike commuter trains...

They used to have chocolate machines. They seem to be removing them gradually. I used to frequently get a warm dairy milk or something similar. Which was a bit nasty, but filled some sort of need/boredom. Now, i don't see them anymore - for a while they had their cover posters turned round, which looked funny, but i haven't noticed that recently either.
