I'm curious about this. I'm not really a morning person, but I have trained myself to go to bed and fall asleep about 11:30 or so. (which I realize most people can't do). Then I'm up and at work by 7:30. I work with West coast folks that regularly don't arrive at work until 10am. Which makes me crazy. Some of it is because they also leave by 5 and I'm at work until 4:30 so the math doesn't add up. But I have to admit I don't understand why they don't come in earlier. Oh I understand why not 7:30 but 9

The human body never really had the opportunity to evolve for jet lag. So when I went to Hawaii for two weeks and was used to waking up at noon, my "noon" was 6am and just in time for a Hawaian sunrise. If I had stayed in Hawaii longer, little by little I'd stay up later and sleep later until I was falling asleep at 2am Hawaii time.
Also, even when people are underground, under the sea (submarines) or in outer space, where the position of the sun relative to the earth doesn't appear to matter, they still follow the same sleep patterns. We have an internal 24 hour clock.
There is an actual chemical difference between morning people and night people. Morning people have the same level of strength all day, whereas night people are measurably strongest and most awake around 9pm. Sleeping pills, the position of the sun, and when you lay down in bed don't have any affect on your natural tendencies and your chemical make up.
I too find it physically painful to wake up early in the morning when I'm unrested. Or god forbid in the middle of a REM cycle. That's the worst. It takes me like an hour to get my equilibrium.
You're the only other person I know that has described it as such. I think it's a side effect of the insomnia. If your body doesn't have enough rest to repair intself, I guess it makes sense that it hurts!
It's nice to know I'm not the only one that gets angry I can't sleep (or stay asleep!) and huts like hell in the morning. Misery likes company?
they make alarms, usually in watch form, that can tell if your in a REM cycle or not, so it has a margin of error so it wont wake you during deep sleep.
I don't usually feel pain when I wake up without enough sleep (though headaches sometimes, I guess that is pain - ok, I'm a liar), but I do get nauseaus.
I totally identify with the annoyance of early-morning coworkers. My company has flex time, which means we can arrive any time between 7 and 10, and leave 8.75 hours later. I usually get in around 9, but some of the 7 and 8-ers are always so smug, especially when they leave at 4. Sorry, but it's just not in me to get up early, and I work better after 5pm than before 9am. And I work enough over my regular hours that my 10-12 hrs a day boss frequently tells me it's too late and I should go home. Until she tells me to get my ass in earlier, I say screw you to all of them.
Sorry to Bogart your post, it's just something I've been thinking about a lot lately, and the rant couldn't really stop. I'll just be happy when the day comes where people understand that those of us who aren't early-risers aren't worthless.
Timely post. I'm in the middle of a 09:00-19:00 class in Phily this week, and I've been guzzling caffeine - something I had given up - like a maniac
