And if there's one thing I don't understand, it's dropping people because they post too little. What could it possibly cost to keep them around in that case?

Unless it's a matter of disclosure, I guess, like "I don't want you reading my innermost thoughts if you're not gonna share yours too." Is that what people are thinking? Wish I knew.
