I used to lock lots of things based on who I wanted to know what, like my address or certain personal info. But then I decided it was too much trouble, so I stopped posting personal stuff, and now I only lock posts that mention things mildly illegal...

Well, since I talk about work and stuff that I'd like to promote/discuss, I keep mine open almost always. However, I also discuss my family, and kids, and now and then there are things I'd like to keep a little more private that I'll "Friends-Only", to keep a little bit of privacy for my family.

These days, i lock everything because my primary journal/site is my blog, and i want the "check out www.creature57.com" post to stay near the top for strangers who see my blog. Because c57 is my main blog, i only put fairly personal things on my lj these days, which is the other reason i lock them.

I'm also a vaguely paranoid internet user, and always have been. I don't usually mention my real name - even my first one. I used to lock entries that were at all personal or not something i wanted strangers to connect to me, if that makes sense. *shrug* Mostly it was just a question of whether or not i felt like i should.

I used to use custom groups a lot more than I do now; I custom locked things on various topics, but now I mostly don't want to bother, so mostly I just friends-lock. I'll leave the occasion quiz unlocked, but really, I no longer want everything posted publicly for the world to see. I also know that employers will sometimes check up on potential employees' MySpace pages and other such things, so I want my public posts to be pretty innocuous.
