Misdemeanors such as assaults, thefts and burglaries will no longer be prosecuted in Contra Costa County because of budget cuts, the county's top prosecutor said Tuesday

That's not "limited government." Limited government is when you pare government down toward its three basic functions (military, police and judicial) not when you eliminate its ability to peform those three basic functions.
I had in mind Grover Norquist's I don't want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub. quote. Maybe prosecuting minor drug offenses ought to be the first thing on the legal chopping block, after all.
see, when it was first discussed cutting back enforcement, it was only things like minor drug offenses that were on the table. but then when Kochly made the announcement, well, it was a lot more sweeping than anyone expected.
Kochly said prosecutors will still consider charging suspects with certain misdemeanors, including domestic violence, driving under the influence, firearms offenses, vehicular manslaughter, sex crimes and assault with a deadly weapon.
and anyway with the limited availability of guns in California, (This is one occasion where the mandatory waiting period can cost lives) it'll be like the wild west, but if only the badguys were armed.
I might get hung out to dry in LJ for making a not-pro-Obama remark, but this is his policy, and it's what people voted for (when electing him). My sister works in the justice department and to raise money for his large spending bills, he's laid very heavily into their budget - she's seen the actual paperwork on the matter and federal prosecution in many states has had their budget slashed by upwards of half to redirect the money to social programs. The money has to come from somewhere, can't just spend with no source.
I want to know how the people of Contra Costa County are responding to this. That's a fairly conservative county, and I suspect that they're furious at Kochly now.
If I was living in Contra Costa right now, and wasn't in a position to move away, I'd be looking hard at organizing a militia for neighborhood watch and defense.
Then I'd probably be harassed because California doesn't like that sort of thing.
