Mistrust & Fraud
The entire world runs on trust, "my word is my bond", promises, and contracts. However, that trust is often abused when miscreants think they can get away with it. When/where that happens, the procedures for getting stuff done turn into a headache.

Safari Annoyance
So, Safari crashes with a whole lot of state (opened web pages, tabs, etc). No problem! After you restart it, you click on "reopen all windows from last session" ... except it doesn't work properly!
The URL that a given window is trying to open is not placed in the URL window, so that if the open fails, you have no way to hit "reload" for it.

Sudden Hardware Failure
I use a Macintosh Quadra 700 as a console server (MacOS 7.6.1, MacTerminal 3.0, and two Applied Engineering QuadraLink NuBus serial cards; total of ten serial ports) for my servers. MacTerminal has "infinite" (until the disk fills up) scroll-back, and when you're debugging a problem, cut&paste beats the hell out of trying to transcribe a panic+ ( Read more... ) -
Smoke Gets In My Eyes
California is on fire.
This morning, it was beautiful and clear here at Lake Tahoe, however satellite photos showed a huge bank of smoke from the fires all over California building up on the western side of the Sierra crest ...

Boston
As threatened, I visited Boston during the last week of June, for the first time in many years. The T still works, for me, as well as it ever did. Just after I landed, a biblical T-storm with "1 second out in it and you're soaked" level rainfall hit Logan, just as I was outside waiting for a bus. a laptoy with a large, fold-out screen, so you could "fold out" an almost arbitrary amount of screen real-estate when you want to be doing a lot of different things at once.
Imagine a MacBook Air with something like that ...

San Francisco!
Later today (after some sleep), I will drive down the hill to Sonoma to take care of some business, and then on Wednesday, into San Francisco, to be sociable; I expect a number of people I know from my Apple days are in SF now, attending WWDC.
It would be good to see LJ friends if that works, scheduling-wise.
