Sometimes I wonder how I get away with these things. Like this morning; I had a nice breakfast with Jake, and Alex is none the wiser. She thought I did something nice for a random guy, and that it was a little unusual, but that didn't seem to tip her off. And if she knew, I would know that she knew. So she doesn't know. She just figures that I

We have got to get some kind of supernatural security system here.
I'd been just about to go and tell Kip he was done for the night when I heard someone approaching from behind. I knew who it was before I even turned around. The sound of her high heels clicking against the floor gave her away.
Besides, she'd promised she'd come visit.
"Think of me as your assistant bartender for the night."
I grinned back at her. "Good timing. Kip is just about to clock out," I told her, waving Kip out the door simultaneously. This was it. Just me and Carly for the rest of the night.
She looked good.Granted, she always ( ... )

Perfect. His coworker can go home, the alcoholics can drown their sorrows and leave us alone, and we'll have some fun. As long as no one calls the police on us, it should be a nice night. And on the off chance that the authorities do show up, I can talk my way out of almost anything. One of the few perk's of being a dead lawyer's daughter is how skilled I am at defending myself. I learned from the best. Law enforcement doesn't stand a chance.
"So it's just you and me then."
The customers don't count. I don't know why, but in my head, they just don't. I think it's because they're more likely to watch than they'd ever be to scold. Scruffy bar men. Ew.
"I have to agree. I've always thought you might have a natural talent for bartending."
Well, I've watched Coyote Ugly enough to fake it. I wonder if Jake will ever dare to disagree with me about these things. I'd be a little disappointed if he told me I'd make a shitty bartender, but it wouldn't slow me down very much. Possibly not at ( ... )

Honestly, it was all I needed. Just one. But since I'm sitting here, I might as well have a few more. I'll find Arianna in a little while, she'll be fine. I'll leave in a few minutes.
"Well, I could tend to the bar...or I could tend to the bartender."
I know that voice. I was fairly sure I knew the girl who was just begging for it from the bartender... but the voice, that voice I definitely know. If I was drunk, stoned, and on the verge of being unconscious because of an overdose on both, I would freakin' know that voice.
"So, what'll it be?"
And then I got a look at her face, before she went back to all eyes on Mr. Bartender. I think I'm going to need a few more drinks after this... just a couple.
Just... I have to process this part first.
Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's just a lookalike. No... wait... there's the smirk... that's her. That has to be her. Why is that her? Why is she hanging all over Mr. Bartender who looks like he's the Ultimate Stud right about now?
"... Carly?"
You can't freakin' be

Bugger.
Whatever, I'm tired of walking around and looking for him, I'll take a break in this bar as long as no one hits on me, and get a hotel room afterwards. He was originally supposed to find me, but I got stuck finding him. I don't know how he expected this to work. Idiot ( ... )

She's not afraid to kiss me in front of this guy. That's a good sign in my book. I smiled as she pulled away, setting her glass on top of a napkin and sliding it towards her.
"Anytime," I told her, hoping I wasn't grinning too widely. I shouldn't be gloating. The ex-boyfriend is obviously more than a little irked by my presence. That's fine by me. I'm majorly irked -- perturbed, even -- by the fact that he interrupted my promised fun.
I'd just have to make sure Carly and I were able to resume said fun once I got off work.
Leaning against the bar, I looked up again just in time to see an unfamiliar young woman sneaking up behind Carly.
"Hey--" I started, but was cut off before I could speak up any more.
"Excuse me miss."
Oh. It's friendly sneaking, not malicious sneaking.
So who's this new character?

Whoa, that felt good. Not just regular good either, Jake's a great kisser. I'd be kissing him a lot more if my ex wasn't sitting right next to me, and yet...I don't want Sam to leave right now. I haven't see him in a long time, if we put some effort into the conversation, it would be a lot less awkward and a lot more fun. If all goes well, I might get to hear a little bit about what Sam has been up to since he ditched me.
He'd probably call it a mutual breakup. It wasn't. I didn't "break up" with him until months after he'd left for Europe. I was still Sam Howell's girlfriend for a long time, regardless of who I was sleeping with.
And there were a lot of whos.
Still are.
When I pulled back I sensed someone moving in back of me. The look on Jake's face told me that I was right, and then he started to warn me but stopped short.
"Excuse me miss."Tensing up for a fight, I gave myself a second of complete stillness. When the...whatever it was in back of me didn't react, I spun around and launched a kick to it's center ( ... )

Well... that's an answer. A sickeningly sweet answer, but an answer just the same. Looks like he really is the new lucky boy. I never pictured Carly in a stable relationship with anyone but my brother to be honest...
Clearly my brother felt the same way, because the look on his face is less than pleased. He's trying to hide it though. Not very well, if there's little flames shooting up on his drink that are starting to get bigger and... good boy, he put them out.
This could get interesting in a rather big hurry if Sam can't keep it under control. I thought he was all set there too. At least, from what he told me. 'Not that big a deal Ari, this guy's teaching me how to fix it' was his exact words.
"Jake, stop that. You know I'm the lucky one. I need another apple jack."
Oh these two are just disgusting. I don't even remember her being like this with Sam. Are they faking this part?
"Sure thing babe."Oh bugger, this is not what I expected in the 'Carly's moved on' sense. This is ( ... )

He said that politely enough, but I don't buy it. Sam doesn't look very happy for me. Maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see, but...I don't know. I never pictured myself with anyone other than Sam, it's not that much of a stretch to think that he didn't either.
"Thanks."
The look on his face is making this start to suck, a lot. I'm lying to him, and even though it's not about something important, it feels like I'm doing something wrong. Especially since it's guaranteed to get out of hand.
"So other than the big relationship...What've you been up to?"
Well, seeing how there is no big relationship, I've been going to the school doing the day and working a combination of screwing and slaying at night, thanks for asking.
Something just exploded...and Sam looks like...no. Absolutely couldn't be. Unless Madsen is hiding in a corner somewhere.
"Just school, and slaying. Jake's sister Alex is my roommate, the three of us spend a lot of time together."
Okay that wasn't a lie ( ... )

Oops.
I need to breathe. Or get some air. Or leave in the near future. The room's already a little heated, and my hands are starting to tingle just enough for me to worry. I'm going to get hell from Arianna on this later if I can manage to get out without blowing something else up.

There goes my drink again. I kept my hand ontop of it, trying to look like nothing was wrong. Damned if I'm going to let this get to me. I just need to keep calm, and make sure nothing hurts anyone.
"I'm happy, you know?"Without me. She's happy without me ( ... )

Sam wouldn't agree with me though. He looks upset. Or maybe I should say Sam looks like he's trying not to be upset when he is. I can tell. And his mood is just coming off in waves. The tension in the room is almost making me break into a sweat.
Not that Jake wouldn't have gotten around to making me sweaty sooner or later, but this is different and kinda annoying.
Okay, another bottle just exploded that makes two...
And is Sam trying to cover flames in his glass?
"I'm going to get some air."I watched Sam walk out, then turned my attention back to his glass. Reaching over to pick it up, I realized how hot it was and put it back down ( ... )
