All together now: Latent Anger

Apr 15, 2003 22:38

So I was perusing LiveJournal, and I found a community for pregnant teenagers. I won't be judgmental about 15 year olds thinking it is just the best thing ever to be pregnant with their eternal love's child. I will pass judgment on the names they have chosen for their future offspring ( Read more... )

Well...I don't think I qualify as a pregnant teenager...but I'd never name my kids anything weird. I hope. *laughs*

See, now if it was still April 1 you could tell me you were pregnant and planning to name the child "Blade" - regardless of gender. Or Zamboni, I suppose, would be a name to avoid.

doesn't it seem like the Jacen and Jakub and Dillen are nothing more than bad spelling?

They are very bad spellings of otherwise nice names. But why the bad spelling? What if other first graders tease him (or her) about the "dumb" spelling of his (or her) name (as first graders are apt to do), and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy? That is, what if the kid internalizes the bad spelling of his (or her) name and believes himself (or herself) to be dumb, and never realizes his (or her) full potential?

Perhaps the parents unconsciously don't want their children to succeed or do better in their lives than the parents did, so the parents give the child an oddly spelled in name with the unconscious hope that it will limit the opportunities the child has someday. Would the parents consciously say "I hope that my child doesn't succeed in life?" - of course not! But there are many unusual names, and even variations of these names, that wouldn't get the child's ass kicked on the playground in 5 or 6 years.

Perhaps, if the child's parents are only 15 years old anyway, the parents don't want the child to succeed because they failed in life.

Yes, Jeff, I think that would be a very bad idea. Very bad.
