queen_geek made an amazing mix for this fic! I love it so, so much. Some of these songs were ones that I actually listened to while I was writing, and some of them were entirely new to me. But all of them fit the story so incredibly well! I also love the progression of the mix- the songs really flow into one another and tell the story of my fic. (And I'm sorry for changing up some of the lines on you,
queen_geek!) Basically, I've been listening to this mix on repeat since I've gotten it, and you will not regret downloading it. Please don't forget to tell
queen_geek what a wonderful job she did!
Opening Credits: I Want You - Alana Davis
Ryan focused his eyes back on the road. Every so often-and usually at red lights, Ryan was a responsible driver-he would look over at Spencer and find him looking back.
Another White Dash - Butterfly Boucher
“Don’t be stupid,” Spencer said. “I’m your boyfriend, you’re supposed to. Next time don’t wait so long. We can get you some ice or something to cool you down before you spend the entire night worrying yourself into a frenzy.”
Ryan murmured his assent as he drifted into sleep.
Details in the Fabric - J.Mraz and J.Morrison
"And maybe, maybe the band’s not important enough for you, that’s fine, I get it. I just thought I was important enough.”
It Ends Tonight - All-American Rejects
Five Years Later
One Marathon - Reverie Sound Revue
There was a nice-looking guy standing on the other side of the room, though, talking to someone up on stage. He had a nice back, Ryan thought objectively. Then he turned around. He’s got a nice face, Ryan thought, and then, holy shit, Spencer?
Your Ex-Lover is Dead - Stars
He looked good. The lights above shone bright on his hair and cast shadows which pooled in the contours of his face. He had a beard, kind of the mountain man look going on which normally Ryan found entirely unattractive but Spencer was making it work. His arms were a little more muscular than Ryan remembered or maybe it was just that Ryan wasn’t used to watching Spencer play from this angle.
Everybody is Someone Else’s Secret - The Audition
He didn’t think he’d gotten as hot as Spencer had but he at least didn’t want to be the ex that you look at and wonder, what the fuck was I thinking?
Fuck Was I - Jenny Owens Young
For this one, I thought the song also tied in with the idea of Ryan wanting Spencer again, but being once bitten and twice shy, as it were.
“Sorry guys,” Ryan said, trying to put on a cheerful voice. He pointedly ignored Spencer, who was sitting with his back against the opposite wall. “I got a little lost.”
Lost in the Plot - The Dears
He was over Spencer. He was, it just hurt that Spencer was with Brendon now. Anyone else and Ryan would have been fine, he convinced himself.
Where Does The Good Go - Tegan and Sara
“I thought you said you weren’t this kind of boy,” Alex gasped out as Ryan dropped to his knees in front of him. The floor was kind of disgusting but Ryan didn’t really care. He needed this, feeling wanted. Feeling like someone wanted him, like he could make them want him if he played his cards right.
Lover I Don’t Have To Love - Bright Eyes
“Life’s not fair,” Spencer said. “If it was I’d have stopped loving you a long time ago. I don’t even know why I keep trying sometimes.”
Song Beneath the Song - Maria Taylor
Ryan rubbed at his eyes angrily. “I just wish it had been anyone but you,” he said, his voice coming out softer than he’d wanted.
Man, I wish I'd been able to find a song that perfectly fit this moment, because I fucking *loved* it, but there's just so much packed into this line that I had to let it stand on its own. Still, though. AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME.
“I know,” Ryan said helplessly. “We really didn’t do anything, though. I got his pants down and I just, I couldn’t, because. Well, because.”
“Because of me?” Spencer said, and leaned down to kiss Ryan. When they broke apart, Ryan’s knees felt weak and he clung to Spencer’s shoulders to stay standing.
“Yeah,” he said. “Yeah, because of you.”
Condition of Desperation - Randy Porter
Come on, with the swelling violins and the "because of you", ugh, how could I *not*?
He curled an arm around Ryan’s waist and pulled him close before dragging to sheets up over both of them.
Stay For Good - Carly Escoto
After all, no one else in the world stood up to Benji Saywell when he kept pantsing me when I was eleven or helped me blow up lawnmowers or any of the other things we’ve been through.” Songs for Blowing Up Lawnmowers?
True story: I really wanted Dammit (Growing Up) to be right here, but in the end I just couldn't add it; it didn't flow with the rest of the songs. STILL. Canon Blink 182 love plus stories about Ryan and Spencer as kids, ugh, it was *so hard* to resist.
“Okay,” Ryan said. “Band, we can do this. We’ve been waiting for this moment a long time and it’s finally here.”
The Therapy - Fools & Horses
“Great,” he said. “I can’t wait.”
Closing Credits: Hey Driver - Lucky Boy’s Confusion
